HAS PETE GROWN UP ?
12/03/09
NOW this could be a first – PETE DOHERTY has said something that will please the parents of his young female fans.
KATE MOSS’s controversial ex has said he is happy being single — and has pledged to keep his distance from women.
Pete, who turns 30 today, said: “I just don’t want to inflict myself on any girl.
“I wouldn’t want her to have anything to do with me or the people I know or my life as it is at the moment. They just don’t need it, you know?”
The fathers of Britain will sleep easier tonight.
How they once were ... Pete Doherty, Carl Barat, John Hassall and Gary Powell AKA The Libertines
In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Pete confirmed
THE LIBERTINES are getting back together and claimed he is clean from hard d**gs.
He also admitted he fears no one will remember him for his music.
It is a fair criticism of Pete because despite writing some great rock ’n’ roll tunes, his d**g-addled, soap-dodging, model-shagging antics are far more notorious.
He added: “I keep reading about people, about unfulfilled potential, that’s a killer that.
“They’ll be able to name ten things about me or to do with me or someone I’ve been with before they’ll ever be able to name a song. And that really is quite sad.”
The
BABYSHAMBLES frontman’s debut solo album, Grace/Wastelands, is out on Monday.
It features contributions from
BLUR guitarist
GRAHAM COXON and has legendary
SMITHS producer
STEPHEN STREET at the helm.
The album is a combination of new tracks and some his obsessive fans will know from early versions which have been available on t’internet over the years.
The old tracks have been brushed down and polished up.
Grace/Wastelands is a much-needed reminder that Pete is a talented songwriter with a rare delicate touch, despite regular and often deserved criticism of some of his darker behaviour.
Pete insists he is now off the d**gs — but I will need a bit more convincing.
He said: “I’ve come into my own head a little bit really, being a bit more honest and open, rather than hiding in a crack pipe or wherever and just not turning up most of the time.”
But Pete does still have one big weakness. He explained: “I’m off that kind of stuff, yeah.
“Complete abstinence is what they advocate — but the odd gin and tonic’s all right, isn’t it?”
And he added a return for The Libertines — the band that captivated a new generation of rock fans before his relationship with bandmate
CARL BARAT imploded in a fog of rows, fights and c***k smoke — is “unavoidable”.
He said: “I just want to play those songs again.”
Pete’s romantic way with words to describe his vision of the world is what his fans hold up as his greatest attribute.
He combines popular culture with big philosophical ideas — such as this comparison of himself with Del Boy from Only Fools And Horses.
Pete concluded: “It’s like Trotters Independent Traders.
“For years they got by on three wheels and a lot of the fun was in the dream and scheme and the scrapes and near misses.
“But really and truly all Del ever wanted was actually to achieve something secretly, you know?”
This time next year, Pete...but not if the three wheels fall off again.
