The Strokes

Is This It? was named the 2nd best album of the decade by Rolling Stone, see not only NME thinks they are bloody brilliant:judge:

Before Is This It even came out, New York's mod ragamuffins were overnight sensations, jumping from Avenue A to press hysteria and the inevitable backlash, all inside a year. Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture and drummer Fabrizio Moretti were primed for star time, updating the propulsion of the Velvet Underground and the jangle of Seventies punk with Casablancas' acidic dispatches from last night's wreckage. Everything happened fast in "Barely Legal" and "Hard to Explain" — the attraction, sex and disappointment — but there was no missing the burn marks left by the guitars and Casablancas' vocals, mixed to the fore and ringed with distortion like he was singing from a pay phone. We got only two more albums from the Strokes, but they inspired a ragged revolt in Britain, led by the Libertines and Arctic Monkeys, and reverberated back home with the Kings of Leon. And for the bristling half-hour of Is This It, New York's shadows sounded vicious and exciting again.

it's about time!!!! i hope they release in 2010 or 2011..with something amazing, the start of a new decade of the strokes! plus i agree NME is often biased, a lot like Spin actually, but props to them for putting the boys so high on the list

Julian Casablancas has said the band are working "night and day" on new material for their fourth album.

Despite being busy promoting his recent solo album 'Phrazes For The Young', Casablancas said he's now thinking about The Strokes' follow up to 2006 album 'First Impressions Of Earth'. He told NYmag.com that the atmosphere in the band is "different than before", with all five members coming together as a group.

"It's night and day now," he said. "Everyone is working as a group, 'Let's do it! Go team!'. Which is amazing. Which is what I wanted since day one. But that's only happening now. Literally now."

Casablancas, who recently moved back to New York from Los Angeles, added that before now part of the problem with The Strokes was to do with individual members' workloads.

"We split the money six ways," he explained (with manager Ryan Gentles being the sixth recipient), "but we didn’t split the work."

However, Casablancas insisted that band relations are good at present, saying: "If I make it superclear why I was unhappy in the past, it might just rehash things that should have been left alone. I think we're fulfilling the promise of what we said we were: actually being a unit that really works on everything."

The Strokes are due to headline the Isle Of Wight festival on June 12, as well as RockNess in Scotland the same weekend.

That's great news wow I am actually surprised. Hmm maybe this is a silly question but just wondering if any of you guys think they'll be doing any more festivals? :D

The Strokes aiming for 'September' album release
Fab Moretti says band are like 'kids in a candy store' at sessions

The Strokes' Fab Moretti has said that the band are hoping to release their new album this September.

The New York band recently started sessions for their fourth album in their home city, with the drummer explaining that the group have made good progress, laying down the basic structure of the songs in the studio.

"We've been recording a bunch – basic tracks are done," he told BBC Newsbeat. "Now we're just running around like kids in a candy shop."

Moretti added that he wanted the album out "hopefully around September".

Speaking of the album sessions, he said that they were "pretty much a free for all – whoever has the best idea [contributes]… coming back in and writing music was kind of like riding a bicycle".

The Strokes had previously revealed that they are working with producer Joe Chiccarelli on the album.

See the new issue of NME, out now, for an exclusive interview with frontman Julian Casablancas about the band's summer live plans.

^ Thanks darling. Been waiting for, forever, so I guess I can make it to September.

The Strokes' Nick Valensi set to feature on new Sia album

The Strokes' Nick Valensi has finally followed his bandmates with an extra-curricular music project.

While Julian Casablancas, Nikolai Fraiture and Albert Hammond Jr have all released solo records, and drummer Fab Moretti formed Little Joy, the guitarist had limited his efforts to photography rather than music while The Strokes took a break.

However, now Valensi has announced that he has contributed to the new album from Sia, entitled 'We Are Born'.

The new album from the vocalist, who appeared on Zero 7's 'Destiny', was produced by Greg Kurstin and will be released in the spring, followed by a gig at London's Roundhouse on May 27. - nme

From nme.

The Strokes have released a 'behind the scenes' video showing the band working on their new album, and you can see it by scrolling down.

Featuring the New York group in Manhattan's Avatar Studios, the 9-minute film includes the band working on a new song called 'Taken For A Fool' with producer Joe Chiccarelli.

Meanwhile earlier today, Julian Casablancas revealed The Strokes will play just two shows this summer.

Casablancas told NME.COM that those will be the band's only shows before they complete the record, with a September release planned.

"We're doing two with The Strokes and that's it for the summer," he said, adding he would take his solo show on the road again instead. "I'll do other festivals alone, If they'll have me!"

See this week's issue of NME, on UK newsstands now, for a full interview with Casablancas, during which he discusses the possibility of playing free shows this year too.

The Strokes confirmed for this year's Lollaalooza festival
Julian Casablancas reveals the band will play the Chicago event, according to reports
The Strokes are set to play this year's Lollapalooza festival, according to reports in the US.

The Chicago Tribune reports that frontman Julian Casablancas confirmed that the band, currently working on the follow-up to 2006's 'First Impressions Of Earth', would be playing the event, which takes place at Grant Park, Chicago between August 6-8.

Meanwhile, Casablancas also gave an update on how work on the new album was going.

"I've written a lot of melodies for it," he explained. "But the other guys have also contributed a lot more: melodies, choruses, parts. It's way more collaborative. So it’ll have a different feel than our other albums."

As previously reported, The Strokes are also set to play the Isle Of Wight and Rock Ness festivals this summer.

Hmm.. not sure what to make of this. Could end up being bad, could be nothing to worry about. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

The Strokes recording new album without Julian Casablancas

Julian Casablancas says that The Strokes are recording their new album without him present in the studio.

The frontman explained that he was leaving his bandmates to work on the music for the record, before he adds vocals alone later on to prevent himself from interfering.

"I think they [the other band members] did a good job," he told ABC News. "Just tracking the songs. It's been nice to get my hands on it."

Explaining why he was removing himself from band recording sessions he added: "I thought honestly it would be a good chance for them to kind of…

"I'm pretty opinionated. Nothing pushy to the point of it's my way or no way, but I'll hear a song and be like, 'Hmmm, it feels like the bass should be like something different'. Whereas if I feel like I wasn't in the room then they could just kind of spread their wings."

He went on to say that the new album "sounds probably more like the last record [2006's 'First Impressions Of Earth'], but I think I might funk it up a little".

The Strokes are set to play the Isle Of Wight festival on June 12 then Rock Ness in Scotland on June 13. Casablancas admitted that the motivation behind agreeing to play them was money.

"Should I say the truth? Money," he said when asked why the band agreed to play the shows. "Yeah. The offers were so crazy that we had to say yes." - nme
