some skins arent even involved in politics in anyway, and its definatly not something you try on for a day or two
in one way im dissapointed of the whole mainstream-ing of skinhead style but on the other hand I'm excited about the cheap knockoffs of freds and ben shermans haha!more for me...

I have just done a photo shoot based on 'This is England' for my MA Fashion Journalism course...well it is more to do with the 'rebel' in skinhead AND punk culture, but 'idea' is there within the pictures of 'social realism'.

yup england has style.. whether its good or bad is debatable.
london IS a trendsetter for any streetstyle and that is the main reason why i studied there (10 years ago)! for the inspiration.
now there are some things that come with this style that isnt that cool...
both my colleagues are well connected (clean) fashion industry people and last london fashion week i made a note about these showroom models who had the dirtiest feet and toes i have EVER seen
my female colleague defended both the models i was talking about saying that its nothing, its just the way they think and live. its part of their i dont try too hard look!!!! you know, the Pete D's and the Amy W's...
im tellin ya all, if this is england then im speechless!!!!

You can't look at Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse and argue that they represent social realism and what is being shown in the film 'This Is England', because first of all they are upper-middle class and secondly it is an 'image' for them and therefore an 'act'.

'This Is England' is social realism, it is a film about the REAL working class - which in this view at the time were skinheads. The real working class are not what I would label as 'chavs' (because to me they are the underclass as the majority do not work). But the real working class are those that are living on council estates and working bloody hard to survive, having 'hard' looking faces come with their tough, hard and often short lives (due to their occupation). They are too tired to worry about image and too tough to take sh*t, they are use to knock backs and I respect them because they do the jobs that we would hate to do.

Oh I know you aren't! Pete, Amy, et al are laughable if not somewhat disgusting to see how such individuals make money from a 'can't be arsed' image and pretend they are all 'working class' - if you want to see working class look at the Gallagher brothers from Oasis. But Pete, Amy et al are f*cked up for the sake of...well, not being f*cked up basically, lol.

I really like the girl's hair who is blonde in the film! And the skinhead look is quite grotesque but in a way that it actually DOES look bloody cool. So I guess I am a fan of the skinhead look.

I see Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty as taking aspects of English culture and appropriating them. I mean Amy for example takes influence from the Ronettes and skinhead fashion.

And yes Pete and Amy are more 'real' and working class, but they like ApertureRomance says mix a lot of other references and styles.

And Amy has always said she likes being girly and glamour and can be very 50s/60s in her clothing and style, which to me doesn't seem very much like a skinhead esthetic/way of thinking. Although both of them do the whole Fred Perry and braces thing. So yes I agree with all of you. Although I'm going to reclaim the Ronettes as American.

I'm a bit confused because the skinhead-subculture isn't the only subculture which had its origin in the english working class. The Mods and Teds for example developed from english working class, too. So I wouldn't equate english working class style with skinhead-style.
