To iron or not to iron

I got a new trench coat today, and well it's kind of wrinkled and was thinking of ironing it. It's 100% cotton and the tag says not to iron. Should I iron or not?

^second that. Ironing will burn the fibers and give it a nice clear sheen - your cotton trench will look like a plastic mackintosh in minutes...not a good thing. The best thing to do is to hang it in the shower with a little steam. Otherwise, if you have a steamer, that would work better. It doesn't directly touch your clothing (i.e. doesn't ruin the material), and steam pulls the wrinkles out.

Me, I'd either live with the wrinkles or send it to the cleaners ... which in fact is how I handle the issue of ironing at my house I do own an iron/ironing board, but the last thing I ironed was ribbon, and that was probably more than a year ago ...

PS In this case I'd point out the care instructions to the cleaners ...

^Good luck with that. There is one other method you could try: use a damp towel or cloth, place that between your coat and an iron. You would iron just on top of the cloth (think heat transfer only) that would fare better than a steamer, but not have the ill effect of leaving a sheen. Outside of that, set the appropriate expectations with your cleaner and make sure they understand how you want the garment to look when it's returned to you.
