Tokyo Midtown

every time I hear the word uni, I remember the name unimog somehow.
both sound cute.

LOL, had to look up unimog...I thought it was a uni-shaped monster...
it had nothing to do with uni!

:woot::woot::woot:

You're going to the Met!! That is beyond awesome!
I hope it's a great production. The music is the best ever......
Let me know everything how it was!
Anthony Minghella production...
never seen anything like it...not anything like what i remember as a child...
changed my whole opinion about opera...
:woot::woot::woot:

cho-cho-san's child is a Bunraku-style puppet! and there are mirrors above the stage to give alternate views and additional impact...
there is even some lovely choreography and excellent usage of gold fans...
here's a clip for you to check out...
http://www.metoperafamily.org/opera/madama-butterfly-puccini-tickets.aspx
they are supposed to be in the garden on their wedding night...
hence, the cherry blossoms and lanterns...
this is def one of the highlights...

there are a bunch of pics online - i couldn't take a pic
but i love love loved it!
...

it was bitter cold out, but it was well worth the effort!
i'd go again in a heartbeat...

so you got these ?

nezu-muse
yes yes yes...
aren't they the cutest?!?!
bunny butt!...
:lol::lol::lol:

super kawaii...

they are def the best thing in the museum shop...
thank you for suggesting them to me!
:D

Wow, that looks stunning! The love duet is some of the most beautiful music ever written, ever. Thanks for the report! :flower: I love the lighting and the dreamy colourfulness of the production. I wonder why they made the child a puppet... Wish I could have joined you :)

but i love anything salty or pickled and i love veggies and seafood...
so- of course, i love asian food!

one thing i wish i was able to find was a shop for just pickles...
i got several different kinds at the store, but i was hoping to find some more unusual varieties...

some varieties here, if you are interested
I haven't had the tomato one.
scroll down a bit until square thumbnails

when you are in ginza area, this shop is available around there.
my faves these rather usual ones, though, as you know, I don't eat umeboshi. :ninja:

I'll be in Tokyo in few days in March and I'm wondering if you'd recommend the Bunka Fashion Museum.
btw, do you know if the 10two store still exists?

This is fantastic thread, thank you!

are you referring to this one ?
you'd find some or lots of things that are worth checking.
but to be perfectly honest I find the pieces in most of the exhibitions/museums a bit static. I mean they tend to look stale in that kind of context. just my opinion, but basically they don't look as exciting there as they do in showrooms. of course there have been successful museum displays done like in this CdG exhibition (pics below) from a few years ago. I'd deifinitely have recommended it. or yohji's dress as a naturalized image softgrey saw in the UK should have been great. but that's not what you'd expect, it might be good to visit.

thank you so much runner! that must be this shop - I just read abt this store in tokyotelephone website so i must have misread the name:)

I will give myself a chance to see the museum and maybe i'd be able to report back here. Yes you are right, clothes exhibition in museums might look too static and unflattering, but I hope to have a chance to read some text (and context;) and to see old collections as well. And I will visit the museum before any shops and DSM:)

you're welcome nqth
I see, good idea you have there!

.....should have been great. but that's not what you'd expect, it might be good to visit.

just noticed this, sorry for drunken syntax
what I meant is if that's not what you'd expect, it might be good to visit the bunka museum.

the somarta piece from a few pages back seems to have arrived though they have only one pic of it in black.

Thanks for the pics runner....
it's easier to see the details on the lighter colour, so that must be why there are more pics of it...

the dress is really lovely, imo...
elegant and sexy...
i really like the placement of the sash...

thanks very much for posting this...
def gives me some idea of what to do with my vintage kimono...
i had the idea to do a sash, but this is a much better way to do it...

you are welcome softgrey
good luck with your kimono!

things in kyoto would be beautiful but the factories around kawasaki too are breathtaking in the night.

it may be good to visit chausser if you are walking around the ebisu / daikanyama area.
they have some nice shoes you'd wear for decades that could go well with your classic CdG's nqth, if you are interested.

this is womens seasonal model though, for reference.

Runner the Somarta dress is really gorgeous...thanks for posting. I love the black one. Wish I could afford it.

In my teens I used to wear a traditional Japanese indigo samui work jacket with matching pencil/mini skirt I asked my mom to make, which was kind of a similar look. So sad I don't have it any more, it was awesome!

^^ that sounds really nice and cute too melisande...
sounds like something isabel marant is currently inspired by...

i'd love to have something like that myself but i didn't see anything like that anywhere while in tokyo...
the closest i got was a dark denim work jacket from Found Muji...
which i'm really happy with, but it is more like an old american railroad uniform than an old japanese farmer...
:ermm:...

thank you for wishing me luck with the kimono runner- i will do my best!
:muscles:

and thanks for that pic of the nighttime factories runner...
super cool looking...
and those shoes really do look like they would be perfect with comme...

you're all welcome
there is a store called okura in daikanyama. I haven't seen what they have for years. but I think once in a while they could have some modern version of that traditional work jacket, as one item of their own indigo line. sort of good old japanese culture is part of their concept.
btw, they have been carrying mens classic models from chausser since the early 00's. the models come in an exclusive color there, very dark blue on the verge of black.

also good timing or coincidence, this new brand which is based in kamakura and specializes in that item seems to have just been launched this spring.
press release in japanese though

some from somarta F/W 2014
