Versace was fairly recognizable in his day, McQueen became almost infamous for his runway antics.......it's not as if Tom started the trend. As for why he became so recognizable, Gucci got a whole lot of attention after that f/w 95 collection, people took notice and in a way it probably incited a public interest in fashion. Perhaps he was the first "celebrity" designer, but it's not as if he made an effort to be, he just became famous, practically overnight.
