But designers were doing the walk for years before Tom came along. Versace was fairly recognizable in his day, McQueen became almost infamous for his runway antics.......it's not as if Tom started the trend. As for why he became so recognizable, Gucci got a whole lot of attention after that f/w 95 collection, people took notice and in a way it probably incited a public interest in fashion. Perhaps he was the first "celebrity" designer, but it's not as if he made an effort to be, he just became famous, practically overnight.

He may not be an egomaniac but taking over creative direction for menswear and women's wear at Yves St. Laurent and Gucci seemed very confident of him. He didn't seem to be too shy of the camera either.
Yeah, he became confident, but early on in his career at Gucci, he barely even walked down the catwalk, as his career progressed, you could see more confidence and by the time he went to work at YSL, he was confident enough that he could help the brand as creative director.
As for being camera shy, neither was Versace, McQueen, Galliano, Klein......he didn't used to be quite as confident on the runway, in his early shows, he kind of came out, waved and went right back off the catwalk.

i don't even know how you can make that assertion. there are SEVERAL celebrity designers both before and after tom ford. you have valentino, gianni, karl, donna, marc, and even ysl. all of these people have larger than life personalities and think that their creative vision is the ONLY vision in the world....and if elbaz just creates the clothes why does he have a spread in harpers bazaar about his paris townhouse? why did he make a point of canoodling with linda e.? why does he float around in dandified lanvin menswear? he's as eccentric as he is for the same reason that galliano is as outrageous as he is (or lagerfeld is as haughty as he is)...there are very few designers behind the major houses that don't play the same game ford does! (i mean why don't you see marc jacobs in a suit or slimane in anything but his minimalist uniform..etc.)...
it's about more than the clothes. and even if it wasn't, it's not like gucci or ysl didn't have clothes FOR EVERYBODY! we all know that when tom ford reigned over gucci, it wasn't a rarefied group that bought into him, it was EVERYWHERE! and if you don't think that other designers aren't trying to emulate that success, you're mistaken. chanel's done it, fendi's done it, vuitton's done it. everyone wants to ride the image train.
all boldfaced designers float around parties with the same air of celebrity that ford did. the only reason people hate tom ford bc he was honest about that whole superficial game and didn't delude himself into thinking that he was more than an excellent marketer.
That's what I'm trying to say, whenever I've heard Ford speak about a collection, or pretty much anything he's done at the houses, he doesn't seem to regard himself as a creative genius or a revolutionary designer.
IMO any house in this day has an image whether it's intentional or not. Gucci is sex and glamour, Versace is glitz, Rochas has become elegance, Lanvin has become feminine and quirky.......people don't want clothes anymore, they want fashion and to me, the difference is that clothes are merely garments, fashion is more, fashion is a lifestyle, it's an aura and that's what people want nowadays..........and with some of the prices, let's hope you get a little more the just clothing.

Emilio Pucci was the sexy aristocratic frontman for the brand who held his shows in the grand palaces of Italian dukes and princes. Who can forget the uber-extrovert Jean Paul Gaultier on Eurotrash with Antoine De Caunes? Mizrahi admits himself that he is obsessed with showbiz and the media. Back to Dior - Dior by Dior topped the bookcharts. The very fact that Warhol's magazine Interview even sold is a testament to the fact that people have been obsessed with designers as celebs long before Tom Ford.

blah blah blah... as someone who has actually gone to some of these parties...and been around some of these people...i can assert with confidence that they are not all the same...
elbaz isn't 'acting' eccentric...he's nuts!...just like tom isn't acting like an ***...he is one!... plenty of people in the fashion industry...including myself...are nauseated by the pretentiousness that goes on with some of the people in the business and actively shun it... look at stephen gan and cecilia dean... who gives a crap about them anymore...no one even goes to their parties...because they are such ***es and so completely enamoured of themselves that it's a huge turn-off...
be careful who you step on as you're climbing because you will pass by them again on your way down...

I poop on Stephen Gan and I don't even know him. He made V from a potent fashion magazine into a major brand asskissing machine.
Still don't get it, I dunno, I just don't see him as egomaniacal, at least not to an obnoxious point. It's obvious that over the years Tom became very comfortable in the spotlight, confidence is something people strive to build, why in this case is it made to sound like a bad thing?

For me to state it simply. Ford made beauitful and gorgeous clothes for Gucci and Yves St. Laurent. As much as some of you would like to disagree you can't! I just think it was for all the wrong reasons.
