UK Harper's Bazaar February 2013 : Anne Hathaway by David Slijper

UK Bazaar used to sell me the fantasy of the seductive power-woman with rich tastes and dark secrets, but now I get the feeling it's more like a sophisticated housewife with arranged lists of impeccable things to do in life. Let's not have any of that dangerous glamour, it'll only disturb the children before bedtime.

Yes! I think after Lucy Yeoman's departure there's no sign of that Bazaar women returning.

Did you read Justine's first editor's letter inside the January issue? She seems intellectual and knowledgeable about fashion, so I don't have a doubt she's incapable of her position at Bazaar. I just want to see the life and soul of the Bazaar women injected back into the magazine. The January issue, as I look through it today, is full of white space and black text. First impressions are lasting impressions.

I like this. I think she looks great and the styling and photography is quite good too. Out of the big slew of Anne Hathaway covers lately, I think this is the best.

I love Anne to bits, but she doesn't seem to be photogenic.
I will say that she is a vision On Screen, but most of her covers and editorials are painful to look at.

This feels dated and what used to be Harper's & Queen.

That was my first thought upon seeing this cover, it does look one of the covers before the revamp. I like the covers, but the eyes are bad, it could have had more life as well.

I agree, I have to say it looks terribly dated. HBUK is not what it used to be.

I don't know what to make of the falling A on the subs cover, it was meant to look innovative but just looks weird.

I was just about to say, it's an almost complete replica of a vintage Avedon cover.

Blouin Artinfo

Photographer David Slijper has taken inspiration from a Richard Avedon image and paid homage to the famed photographer for the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar with Anne Hathaway.

Avedon took the image of his muse, Dovima, on a ladder whilst adding the “A” to Bazaar for the December 1959 cover of the magazine.

The subscriber's cover looks a bit like an entry from America's Next Top Model - good pose but poor face (and for such a gorgeous girl!) Both pictures are very commanding though. Not excellent, but at least it's more eye catching than Elle UK's February offering.

One of the covers above shows a subtle interplay of lines and angles between the photography and typography, while the other shows a woman being visually overpowered by a big ladder.

I agree, the angle of the ladder in Anne's is off, making it much more prominent.

The longer you look at the vintage cover, the more you see all the tiny ways in which the shapes and proportions echo each other, the A of the outfit, the dimension of lines in the text to match the ladder...

Alright, so I've come to the conclusion that this is what Elle should have been like months ago. The staff who transferred have made this into a better version of Elle. Bazaar was the better magazine. But I feel as though I'm looking at a revamped Elle. The structure throughout resembles Elle too much. Bazaar used to have a fullness about it, a certain sophistication that ozzed on each page. Now.. it's empty! Almost like Lucy Yeomans' has upped and left with everything.. including the computer software.

I have a feeling we're about to see a whole lotta' vintage themed pictures throughout Justine Picardie's reign. She's mentioned Diana Vreeland on multiple occasions. Vreeland must be her new obsession.. after Coco Chanel.
