I've never been won over by Lemaire's menswear, and I'm even less so with this collaboration. It's all so... plain. I adore simplicity, but with his basic design sensibilities and Uniqlo's mass-produced compromises, I'm not convinced this collaboration will bring anything special and unique-- definitely not with the menswear. I mean, I can put together my old Jil Sander and Calvin Klein pieces, mix it with some older Filippa K ones and some Black Fleece pieces and I'm good.

I have a few Uniqlo pieces, and the lack of quality: non-functioning buttonholes and non-functoning lapel notch for example, really leaves me cold. I get that these are consumer-freindly pieces, but I can get much better quality versions at a Club Monaco sale.

I remember you wrote something similar in the Lemaire S/S16 thread and again I completely agree with You, Phuel. In my opinion, those clothes have zero appeal without the luxurious fabrics, intricate construction and let alone how insipid and plain Christophe’s clothes are. The menswear jackets and coats look so dull, especially the outerwear.

The only thing that caught my attention was a short coat with belt from the womenswear collection but It says “blended”; probably wool/mohair or in the worst case wool/polyester.

It came out a bit more on the lines of MHL in my eyes, which is probably why I love it so much. Definitely not for the consumer looking to feel and look special, and ultimately you can see it's visually 60% Uniqlo/Muji and 40% rehash of what Lemaire has done. I do agree the quality isn't top notch but at Uniqlo it depends on the line too.

Frankly the quality at Club Monaco, All Saints or whatnot might be superior but no way in hell I'd grab a pair of perfectly made scalloped shorts even if they were 1.99. Except their reduced price is a regular price at Uniqlo and I can find something just as durable (if lucky) and a lot more interesting there, and by interesting I mean less.. unique. I don't like that uniqueness.

What is you can find for better quality and similar price is MHL itself, when on sale... but sometimes you just don't feel like digging through leftovers wishing something was red or navy instead when it's all here, ready to be yours.

Yeah-- very good point Mullet about having a decently priced line of simple pieces that are available in decent supplies that will blend in quite nicely with one's designer pieces. And, without waiting to weed through XXXL at a sale (thank goodness those days are behind me now).

I'm also always wary of that awful "blend" word, george: It almost always means there's 95% of the weak material and only 5% of the desired material, yet still qualifies as "cashmere/wool"...

It's good for what it is but honestly i expected a little bit more.
I can buy most of the pieces of this collection at COS. The styling is great but not everybody is going to wear it sweater as a scarf.
From a design point of view, i find it a bit poor.

Those clothes are very modern, very now with a timeless appeal but as a collection and unlike the J+, it feels a bit done.

The construction and fabrications are VASTLY superior to what you can get at COS, though the look reminded me of COS as well.

I've been privy to some insider knowledge of the line. For those doubting its quality I think you'll be surprised. I think in some instances it's better made than Lemaire's actual collection (which is not actually that great).

But this is exactly what I was hoping for. It's not cheap versions of his collection but rather Lemaire's version of Uniqlo. He's tweaked a lot of their staple pieces and most of the fabrics are Uniqlo's core fabrics which they have very carefully developed and are unique to them (soft touch jersey, extra fine merino wool, wool blended cashmere, etc). And Lemaire has added some of his own styles and fabrics which I bet will make it into their main line.

I don't think the strategy was to design for the fashion conscious who already know Lemaire. I think it's more about Lemaire applying his pragmatism and smart design sensibility to a whole new customer who may not even care that it was designed by him. I think the designs are really about helping people in a practical way than being new or exciting. I mean, those merino wool pieces are machine washable. I'll take that over some tricked out gimmick any day.

I want to believe that this will be good, but I truly have been disappointed by the quality of 80% of all of the Uniqlo items I've ever purchased. The knits in particular have all turned into pilly messes in a very short time, so I don't really believe that the Lemaire collection is going to be that much better in terms of quality/textile longevity.

I'm not understanding the whole "questionable quality" responses I see in the Uniqlo threads here. I've bought a good number of clothes from them in the past, and I've never had any problems. Mind you, I wear the bejesus out of my clothes before finally parting ways with it. And the last winter coat I bought ($80) is one of the warmest coats I've bought, and strong enough to withstand this past winter, which was incredibly brutal. Sure, it's not Hermes-ey in quality, but it's Uniqlo; it's from a sweatshop. Like Lisa Simpson once said: "Eh, slave labor. You get what you pay for."

That said, I'm a sucker for anything navy, and that's one of the navy-est of the navy blues I've seen in a while, so I'll gladly give it a gander when it hit stores.
