US Harper's Bazaar May 2012 : Penelope Cruz by Terry Richardson

So, they have at least two locations shots in here (Las Vegas for Gia Coppola, and a Beverly Hill Hotel 100th anniversary shot) but one would never know they are shot on location because they ZOOOOOOOOOM in so much.

Vogue's editorials might be bland, but at least one never loses the sense of location, or the specialness of the place being featured.

Still can't get over how horrible that James Cameron ed is. It looks even worse on page than in scans.

I  the subscriber's cover except for the placement of that "the eye..." text, I wanna smack the person who made that decision.

I would be more impressed with the subscriber's cover if it wasn't the same concept (more or less) that they used with Katy Perry's subscriber's cover for December 2010.

too bad that subs cover looks like a washed out Gwen Stefani for L'Oreal ad. at least with Perry's bejeweled excess subs cover there's a twist which set the cover/subject apart while invoking a certain cultural climate. neither nowhere near as innovative or striking as the long ago shot Patchett/Blumenfled VOGUE cover.

i do like the overall look of Kinga's ed; esp the opening page with the beautiful marigold Max Mara jacket which really pops against the white pegboard backdrop.

these more scaled back, minimalst shoots under the 'redesign' read very British VOGUE too me, as well certain aspects of the more cleaned-up page layouts in other parts of the 'new' HB. and while this appeals to me visually, mentally i'd like a change and not see the same similar themed editorial concepts month after month. even with these minor surface tweakings HB still feels stale and redundant and it's certainly NOT enough to hide weak, same old same old content or revitalize this lost cause of magazine.

I can't get over how awful that fake cleavage is, I even judged it at the newsstand today.

Penelope wearing Versace would have made an attractive cover. Or the one with the Giambattista Valli headpiece, where Penelope is recognizable. I'm keen to see another photographers aesthetic blend with the new cover design. Although I doubt Terry Richardson's departure from American Bazaar is sometime soon.
