US Vogue December 2021 : Sarah Jessica Parker by Daniel Jackson

gorgeous cover and editorial even if it would’ve been even more impactful if Adele’s hadn’t been a profile cover too, IMO.

Vogue Magazine is back in the business with 4 good Vogue covers consecutively (September, Lorde, Adele and SJP). now if only the editions weren’t so ssssskinny…

^Yup. Their only bad covers this year are from Feb, April, and August in my opinion. This year's covers are pretty solid for Vogue USA.

I love the cover! I wish they only had used studio shots, they feel very festive… the others, not so much.

182 pages? I’m in.

I like it as a thing, if feels grand enough to be a December cover. I’m sad it’s a Dolce dress on the cover, but then I’m always sad when anything of theirs turns up in any prominence.

Happy to see SJP back on a cover, she’s always just worked for me. She gets it.

In terms of the comments about it being boring and Disney-esque etc. I genuinely think that’s what most of Vogue’s readership want from things. An escapist vision into a world where a ball gown is worn by a celebrity they know. It’s middle of the road but most of the world is on that road.

Personally, I think that photo with the feather hat would’ve made a better cover if it was portrait. But I love the editorial!

Love it! very festive I also like the fact that she's one of the few celebrities that embrace their age.

Spectacular editorial now, but give it time: it'll grow even better. That dystopic AGELESS STYLE! chant sung by many, believed by none? This is it come true. This fashion, this spirit, this SJP, seem to exist outside of time. It is so good to see her exuding her trademark energy again. An instant classic.

Feels like everything is right in the world whenever an old Wintour favorite makes a reappearance on the cover of American Vogue and I'm rather fond of this cover as a whole. It's unconventional to run a profile full-length cover image but it works for December and feels festive enough, I approve.

Daniel Jackson's work here feels very Patrick Demarchelier, in the best way possible. The photograph of Sarah Jessica Parker in the feathered Valentino hat is utterly gorgeous, as is the one of SJP in the feathered Fendi dress. The beauty styling is also super flattering on SJP! Bravo on all accounts, IMO.

Production said they want Kim Cattrall for season 2, they're doing the impossible to get her in, but it's clear she hates SJP with passion.
I hope they fail! people miss Samantha like her character was good the entire series.. it was actually only good for the first half of the series, much like Sarah's Carrie and probably as a result of everyone becoming super self-conscious due to the immense success of the show, Kim's acting became less genuine by year 3 with the Richard plot, it reached parody levels with Smith and it's completely unnecessary with the movies that came out. Feud aside, I really hope the attempt to get her back on the show is just a rumor and that they say Samantha just died a few years ago.. she never really had much dimension (just another person who has a career and likes a lot of sex) so it wasn't sustainable.

I like the cover. I'm not particularly excited about the reboot but have been rewatching SATC episodes lately and will definitely tune in. Aesthetically, yes it's typical American Vogue but considering the situation with the rest of Vogues, at least it looks cleaner and at least it's not yet another activism/empowerment through consumption gimmick.. just a cheesy actress in a cheesy dress in probably her best angle and selling a show.. I'll take it.

Love the cover and editorial…the Vogue i have missed… a fresh air in this times of Covid, politics and merging editions.

Sarah’s work with the camera is organic and she always brings something more. Even that she is from another era. She knows how to deliver and as Carrie, her love for fashion is genuine. She is a truly fashion icon. Nice to see Tabitha’s in Vogue, can’t remember her last editorial!

I wish it was longer too! Maybe there is one more photo on the index?

I hated Anna’s Vogue, specially this year, but this is a great way to close the year!

This is the return of SJP to Vogue. She was more a Bazaar girl like Jennifer Aniston for years.

I love the editorial, it's such a joy to see SJP back for this magazine - it just feels right. After a year and a half of upheaval I'll take anything that feels familiar, so the SATC reboot and this shoot are exactly what I need.

I think the shot itself is lovely, it's very elegant and it's appropriately striking for the return of Sarah Jessica on US Vogue, but I don't like it all that much for the cover. Even though I know it's a profile shot, it feels like she has her back to us...perhaps because she's facing towards the spine of the magazine and not towards the way it opens? It just feels like she's the wrong way round. I also don't like that it's too similar to last month's. US Vogue's aesthetic lacks some consistency nowadays, but then they also have these random moments where there's way too much similarity between back-to-back covers. It happened last year with Naomi and Lizzo: two full body shots on grey backgrounds one right after the other, and now two full-body profile shots with full dresses and a neutral background colour. I'm probably nit-picking, but it's because it's almost perfect and just misses the mark - which is always frustrating.

In the years since they stopped working with Testino, they really lost a defined cover look - I really wish they'd stuck with a roster of 3 or 4 cover photographers. I thought Mikael Jansson was going to be a great Testino replacement for them, but they don't work with him much anymore. I didn't always like the results, but I did like that US Vogue had more straight-forward and commercial cover shots. I can appreciate them trying new things, but it doesn't quite work for me yet - it's like they're almost there, and some of the photographs are really beautiful, but something just doesn't quite come together.

I think it's an absolutely gorgeous cover, and the editorial is quite nice. Daniel Jackson is one of my favs.
I know everyone here hates D&G, but that dress is beautiful, and looks sublime on her. Cope.

I'm still not excited about this reboot tho. No Samantha, no go.

hot take: Samantha kinda sucks. Kim Cattrall is talented and charismatic, but the character has always been more of a caricature of a "liberated" woman than a flesh and bones character. It's fun for a scene or two in half hour episodes, but if it once had shock value, it certainly doesn't now. The shtick has gotten old. People who love and identify with the character likely don't want her to evolve too far from how she was written 23+ years ago, but it was already getting embarrassing by the time the last movie came out. It's not that women over 50 (or 60) can't be sexual, it's that if you're 65 and all you have to offer in terms of personality is "I like sex!", that's just pretty cringe. I've read Kim resented that Samantha was written to have Cancer, and to me that says it all. Even the actress portraying Samantha is resistant to depth and growth in the character. I'm looking forward to seeing how the show evolves after a decade of significant shifts in society, and I'm glad they renamed it and are trying to establish it as its own thing.

I think Samantha in the last movie was a nail in the coffin for Kim. The rumour was that in the supposed third movie she went to chase Miranda’s son and it would be extremely embarrassing for Kim to do a character like that. Btw Samantha does suck and Kim had a good reason to say no.
