US Vogue March 2008 : Drew Barrymore by Steven Meisel

I don't think anyone said that a fashion magazine should be read for educational purposes. No one is looking at Vogue to be their primary source of world news. That would be a mistake. I think what people were saying was that editorial content is not the sole judge as to whether or not a magazine was good that month. Vogue is not going to replace a publication on any other subject matter be it as important as politics or as frivolous as entertainment nor does it strive to but its fashion coverage extends beyond the point of just editorials. I think the magazine is more than just a picture book when it comes to fashion. On the whole I'd have to say that I find the fashion articles in Vogue US (with the noted exception of their pandering celebrity coverage) to be better than the editorials which are for the most part staid and very conservative in terms of styling and execution. I'm not as inspired by seeing Trentini jump higher and higher each month as I am by A.L.T.'s column, Jeffery Steingarten's knowingly ironic food pieces or one of the segments within the View section.

 I think that is always my favorite article in Vogue! I always read it.

I think this is a very good issue - for any magazine but especially for US Vogue. Editorial content is not the sole judge of an issue for me. US Vogue always has compelling articles and interesting non-editorial content. The People Are Talking About & Fashion Flash sections are great this month, the View Global Glamour piece is full of interesting women and the articles on Stefano Pilati and Benazir Bhutto are great. I don't think a magazine can be judged on editorials alone. There are words after all.
I definietly agree with you on this note.I always buy US Vogue no matter how much i hate the cover because i enjoy their articles which are always well written and interesting to me.Harper's Bazaar,ELLE.etc bore me because thats what they lack. They might have good editorials but there is nothing to read,i get through them very fast.

And i dont agree with what others said; that Political articles should be dismissed because they are in Vogue, um they usually have the most respectable contributors writing those pieces so that argument does not hold.Vogue has a good history of the best authors and people from all fields who have written for the magazine.

If you compare Vogue's political content with that of Vanity Fair, which also features celebrities, fashion photographers and pop culture content, there is an ocean of difference in depth and tone. So yes, there is nothing stopping a magazine that's heavy on celebrities and popular culture from addressing serious issues in a serious way... it's just that US Vogue isn't that magazine. Though Plum Sykes would be tingling to her toes to be thought of as a "respectable contributor".

Plum Sykes, that's all I should have said at the start, for why I don't take US Vogue seriously.

^^^^LMAO,can not stand the woman. But she is easy to ignore specially when you have people like Joan Juliet Buck and Julia Reed writting excellent articles.^_^

I know, that's what I thought, I guess we might all agree on the subject of Plum Sykes!

I don't have any issue with Vogue's "Nostalgia" section or anything that's a personal account - just spare me the attempts at political analysis, unless it's the impact that headscarves or red sweaters have on influencing voters - where fashion intersects with "first impressions" and issues of psychology. That is the side of politics that fashion could rightly dissect with authority.

I have to say I quite enjoyed this issue. Unlike some other Spring or Fall Fashion issues, this one seems to be filled with content not just ads. I really like the edits as well especially the Elson one which was not what I was expecting, I think they got their inspiration from t.v's Mad Men but with a hollywood twist, I can't blame them since it's a beatifully shot series. As for the discussion about Vogues writing, I have to say that I'm on the hater train, I just find it so boring. There back of the book stuff is good but I never read the front stuff except for maybe Nostalgia. For me a great magazine with great articles is British Vogue they always come up with great one's that deal with fashion or pop culture.

...

Definition of jaw-dropping: that picture of Stefano Pilati and Caroline Trentini. Time to make a giant poster of that shot!

Meanwhile, I am so sad that Blake Lively isn't photogenic. I love to watch her on-screen but her charm does not come through in her pictures. Oh well...

Thank you kochie332...it was very generous of you to scan Drew's feature for us:heart::flower:

I think the last girl in the YSL group shot is Milana Keller, not Gemma...at least that's who I thought it was at first glance.

^^ I see Milana Keller too. Doesn't really look like Gemma to me.

Thanks for all the scans Luxx!

I don't think I'll buy the issue but thanks for the scans!
