US Vogue November 2018 : Claire Foy by David Sims

VERY underwhelming issue, yet slightly better than last month imo.

Review:

15 Years of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (14 pages) - Definitely the strongest editorial in this issue. As expected, Imaan takes care of business like she normally does, but Kendall's shots are surprisingly strong as well.

Battle Royal (8 pages)

First look is sponsored by Olay (of course followed by 3 x pages of ads, with Maartje Verhoef beaming an energetic and adorable smile. Shot by Gregory Harris. It's just about the only image which screams US Vogue for me. Last Look is Louis Vuitton's Chelsea boots next to a traffic cone.

Features include:
- At Home with author Laura Sartori Remini and her patner
- Tony award-winning actress Cynthia Erivop shot by Ethan James Green
- Some drivel about Chrissy Teigen
- The cast of The Ferryman which will show at Broadway soon, shot by Leibovitz. Very moody and cinematic. Looks like it's the only edit overseen by Posnick.
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by Leibovitz

EDITED: All of this is so mediocre.

I do like Imaan and ASAP’s edit though.

I saw the PDF online and have to ask... is just my imagination or the quality of some of the pictures is very bad or was the intention of the photoghrapher/editor?

This editorial makes me wonder, has Kendall ever appeared on the same page as Emily Rata? Is there a type of 'modelling maths' where multiplying negatives would create a positive effect?

Lol, this booking editor must have a cruel sense of humour to even on paper pair Kendall with Imaan. Anna probably went 'Crikey, it's been ages (April) since we've last had Kendall on our pages. Book her!' And in true passive-agressive fashion, the booker one-upped everyone by casting her next to one of the strongest models in the industry right now.

But on a serious note, sans the last shot, I'm actually somewhat pleased with what I'm seeing here. Especially the shot of her in gladiator sandals, and the other one with Belle Epoque-era hair.

^^ Those two photos are stunning. I'm not a big fan of her but I really love how good Kendall looks.

Wow I can't believe this editorial is in American vogue... I had given up on them....

Both girls did amazing... it shows how much Kendall has improved as a model in terms of her print work... she more than holds her own against Imaan (who I agree is probably in the top 3 strongest model in print right now)...

Kendall must be feeling the pressure of working with Imaan because she is actually doing something in the editorial. I like most of her shots. But Imaan just slayed it down. The first shot is stunning, and the variety she gave in the rest showed how much she has mastered the print game.

I suppose this is what happens when you cater to a broad demographic who's clearly not familiar with fashion history at all. My first thought when I saw the image was Belle Epogue, Vogue is saying Edwardian/Gibson which in theory is the same era. Didn't even consider for a second that this was supposed to be an 'afro.'

Oh well, at least this controversy could result in some sales for Vogue, God knows they need it for this dull cover.

Vogue sparks controversy for styling Kendall Jenner in an Afro

By Elana Fishman

Vogue is once again being accused of cultural appropriation — this time, for a shoot starring Kendall Jenner wearing what appears to be an Afro.

Jenner, 22, models the hairstyle with a floral Brock Collection dress in a November story celebrating the 15th anniversary of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. But after the magazine posted a shot from the Mikael Jansson shoot on Instagram, angry followers flooded the comments section to ask why the publication didn’t simply hire a black model for the job.

“Why didn’t you get someone with an actual afro and freckles to model for you instead?” one social media user wrote. “If y’all wanted a model that didn’t look white y’all could’ve booked a girl of colour,” another pointed out.

And when a handful of commenters argued that black models often have their hair straightened or dyed for shoots, a user replied, “The discussion is more about the double standard that there is towards Afro hair and black culture. There are negative connotations surrounding actual black people who have this hair (or other things that are a part of black culture) however, conveniently when a white person does it it is suddenly ‘fashionable’ or en vogue. The thing about straight hair or blonde hair is that it’s already part of the western beauty standards ideal, so there’s no double standard.”

Vogue issued the following statement to Page Six: “The image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the ’60s and the early ’70s, that puffed-out, teased-out look of those eras. We apologize if it came across differently than intended, and we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it.”

When your main reference in life is "everything revolves around my sense of outrage", it's no wonder the subtleties are missed. And typing furiously on phones and keyboards probably leaves no time to read through art history books.

It's no surprise why mainstream fashion editorials are so safe nowadays. This kind of misguided outrage curbs creativity. I can see Vogue, with their already shaky grasp on relevance, avoid anything and everything which may seem vaguely touchy to their followers. What we'll be left with will be nondescript styling and photography which would make certainly taint the magazine's 'jewel of the fashion publishing crown' status.

That’s not controversy though it’s click bait. It’s one of the reasons why magazines are still considered a higher tier than online journals. “Social media users” should not be used for quotes. I refused to even read it after reading the headline. Nobody’s bothered by that Kendall picture. Period.

Kendall or Gigi: *breaths*
Trolls: "I find it offensive, #kendallandgigicancelled, another white privilege girl trying to make trend something that mortals do everytime"

I find it annoying. Is like the Vogue Italia's may cover by Klein... it was just a tan, not a black face... same with the papparazzi controversy. People are always looking for one -stupid- reason to criticize them and it sucks. If you don't like them, don't buy magazines with their face, don't follow them on instagram, don't google their names... is so f****ng easy.

I don't really care about Kendall, I like Gigi and Bella but are not my faves. But this needs to stop.
