US Vogue September 2022 : Serena Williams by Luis Alberto Rodriguez

It's a beautiful, probably my fav of her Vogue covers.
The editorial is nice, but nothing special, although I love the shot of her back in the white dress.
The news of her retirement is the most interesting thing about any of this, because she was always gonna go out on the cover of Vogue.

Honestly, this is breathtaking. Serena looks soft and strong at the same and it works.

the best September cover since Jennifer Lawrence’s cover. As a HUGE Serena fan I’m sad that she’s retiring, but I’m glad she’s doing on her terms and not because the sport is forcing her too.

I love, love, love the colors. It really stands out. And she looks gorgeous, Serena photographs so well. Indeed looks like Ritts + Annie. Unexpected, but so likeable.

The Interview is big joke:
I’d like to think that thanks to me, women athletes can be themselves. They can play with aggression and pump their fists. They can wear what they want and say what they want and kick butt and be proud of it all.[vogue.com]

She very often argued with umpires because she didn't accept that she broken the rules.

Nice cover. Olympia’s appearance is such a sweet surprise. Btw, they are not going to celebrate the 130th anniversary?

With the current state of the magazine, I'd be embarrassed to pretend to honor and celebrate the long legacy of the Vogue brand. It's likely better this way...
Anna doesn’t like to celebrate. Edward is upset, I bet. Maybe they’re planning something to December.

What I love about this cover is that doesn't feel forced or made to create hype on social media and certain fandoms, is just an sport icon that worked hard to be where she is, she earned the recognition and respect of the industry and that made her perfect for the september cover. And that's something we didn't have since Jennifer Lawrence's last cover.

Just to clarify, no hate to Beyoncé or Taylor Swift of course their covers were well deserved, but the buzz and hype created around them made their covers feel pretentious.

A big part of John McEnroe's fame came from his "confrontational on-court behavior", so it's not as if tennis is a stranger to men arguing with umpires.

True, but Serena played during the Era of Federer and Nadal on the men’s side. Two of the greatest sportsmen of all time.

I don't blame them for not acknowledging their 130th anniversary. Can you imagine with the current state they're in AND with a straight face, seeing photos by well... you name it... John Rawlings, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, the list goes on and on...

Ditto. Not much to celebrate considering Vogue is now just a pamphlet kept on life support to lure online advertising and drive social media content and clicks.
