US Vogue September 2022 : Serena Williams by Luis Alberto Rodriguez

The Interview is big joke:
I’d like to think that thanks to me, women athletes can be themselves. They can play with aggression and pump their fists. They can wear what they want and say what they want and kick butt and be proud of it all.[vogue.com]

She very often argued with umpires because she didn't accept that she broken the rules.

Ok what we're not going to do is downplay Serena's major major impact in women's sports, regardless of her arguing with umpires. This is a great win for vogue, as US Open ticket prices jumped almost immediately after. You can't beat an announcement like this, especially with the accompanying editorial piece by Serena.

Have you looked at Agassi´s videos when he was a top player? for every time that Serena argued with umpires, top men players have done it twice... This statement is the absolute truth for modern times, she (and Venus) brought the spotlight to women´s tennis like no other since early 90s.

A preview of the contents:

Oh my god, I hate it all. The shot of Gigi looks like an assistant snapped a bts photo during a Demarchelier photoshoot to post on their Instagram stories. Gigi looks good, but the photography falls flat. No comments on the Gucci gang. Who books those people for Vogue? Nigel Shafran will haunt me in my death, I genuinely shiver when I read his name that's how much I can't stand his work. An utterly hideous preview of an undoubtedly hideous editorial. The fourth slide looks like a fancy phone or a car commercial you see on the TV, it simply doesn't work for me. Annie's preview is a complete eyesore but it is also the only story I'm actually interested to see in full. The two models look dreadful and the greens are... very green. Good lord, what happened? Looks like Serena might end up being the only highlight of this sad, sad issue.

It's very telling you had to go at least 20 years back for an example of a top male player. Besides, the likes of Agassi got called out for it plenty enough, but unlike Serena, they didn't play a victim and cry "-ism." I'd have more respect for Serena (and her fans) if she at least owned up to her behavior: You know what, yeah, sometimes I behaved shamelessly, but I couldn't help it in the heat of the moment.... I regret it....etc. Instead, it's constant deflection, blame shifting, and inability to take responsibility.

The world is full of sportsmen who get a free pass for all the instances when they were carried away in the heat of the moment, or when they thought they knew better, or when they spoke out of turn. It's smoothed over, forgotten about, largely forgiven, or - when it happens so often it can't be ignored - it's seen as a positive and added to the list of factors that 'makes them a winner'. Oh, what a character he is! Men get a pass for being aggressive, and on top of that, get rewarded with twice as much respect and praise if they maintain a veneer of sportsmanship. Slip up, and no-one will hold it against them, or use it to define them.

But in order to be worthy of respect, women still have to win, but they must also - AT ALL TIMES - maintain the appearance of traditional feminine values. Don't look too muscular, but also ignore all the insults about your inferior physical strength. Consistently win games, but always remember that a sweet smile and politeness counts for more in court than maintaining your concentration in the moment. Slip up once and you will never be allowed to forget it. No-one will care that you went on to win the game, and that you repeated those triumphs year after year, mostly without incident.

As for sponsorship, women just have to be pretty, they don't even need to win much.

I stopped caring for tennis long ago but if you want recent examples, is Novak Djokovic enough? Agassi and the likes never "played the victim" because as white males, they never encounter any issues as Serena or any other female athlete have.

When did Novak ever threaten an ump? He accidentally hit someone and was disqualified from the tournament. Don't remember him having a Vogue cover complaining of persecution.

^first, not on a Vogue cover but his people (he also? can´t remember) online complaining about persecution because of his unvaccinated status. Which secondly, didn´t stop him from lying to get away with it and thirdly, is still playing. I´m sure that if that was the case with Serena, she wouldn´t be allowed to set foot on a tennis court ever again.

It is always an indicator whether someone truly watches tennis when they defend Serena Williams' behaviour on court.

As someone who has actually watched tennis for nearly 30 years there has been no other player on either side of the game who has physically threatened lines judges, umpires and players as Williams has. Everyone player is capable of a tantrum in high pressure situations but she has threatened to shove a ball down a lines person's throat because of a foot fault, told a player she would see her in the locker room, fist pumped and shouted "yes b*tch" at another player she was losing to, told an umpire she was unattractive inside and to walk the other way when she met her next in a corridor and overshadowed players like Naomi Osaka and Samantha Stosur when they were in the process of winning their maiden slams with her on court tantrums and screams of "I'm a mother. Say you are sorry" because the umpire noticed her coach indicate what side of the court for her to serve to.

Any criticisms of her behaviour shouldn't be dismissed as someone being racist or sexist when there is a long history of it. She has achieved so much in tennis and is one of the greatest of all time but let's not be blind to her antics either which the media glosses over.

This is the best of her Vogue covers to date

Outrageous. And you just know this hideous mess is going to worm its way into all international editions as the tragic ''New World'' theme editorial. I've been on a streak of positivity these past few months where I practically erased my standards and just embraced whatever was at least tolerable to look at, but perhaps I'm not as ready to let go of September as I previously thought.
I got more repulsed the further I scrolled through this ''new world'' article. The audacity to reprint that annoying Bella Hadid editorial again?! Tyler, the Creator? Seriously? Shoving Audrey Marnay and Missy Rayder in that hideous group Gucci image? Blasphemous. It's all so hideous and amateur that it makes my blood pressure rise - I know it's not that serious, but frankly, it is. If only one could unsee things...

Daniel Jackson is the only light in this, beautiful images and I particularly love how the fabric looks in the image with Precious, Paloma and Devyn together. Wish they just scrapped the rest and focused on this story instead. Would make flicking through any edition of Vogue much more enjoyable than the eyesore that is this stupid mishmash of clashing photographs.

Thanks for sharing the editorials, Aracic.

May I know how many pages does this issue have? I assume that it's still around 300+, which I understand.

I think all of that content might just be from one shared editorial/portfolio, and not a preview of the various editorials. I hope.

You´re right, I don´t watch tennis anymore so I had to google... The Biggest Male On-Court Meltdowns in Tennis History
And there are more articles so it´s really hard for me to argue that is not sexist or racist... but we´re going on circles, no one´s gonna change their minds.
