US Vogue September 2022 : Serena Williams by Luis Alberto Rodriguez

Wouldn’t be surprised if shots from that editorial wind up as covers for Vogue Spain, etc.

Definitely. I really hoped this would be a British exclusive, but I guess that was just me being delusional.

Weren't there rumors that America Gonzalez is on the cover of Vogue Korea or some other Asian edition? Wouldn't be surprised if this was the shot.
Most of the portraits have a certain cover potential, I feel the first shot of Raquel in particular could be quite a good choice. I'd also go with Shalom or Rianne's (for France, ofc lol) shots.

A preview of the issue and some words from Anna Wintour:

I guess such video is supposed to give audience something exciting to look forward to. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything exciting or interesting that makes me want to purchase this issue. Boring.

It speaks volumes that a retiring tennis player is on the cover of the most important issues of the year and Anna Wintour has no idea how to pronounce Pierpaolo Piccioli properly…

This still looks like the cover rumor thread, nothing cames.

There's zero denying American Vogue is a shadow of its former self, and I'm at the point in which I cringe at the likes of Anna Wintour attempting to big up the magazine by declaring the September issue as their "biggest issue" when those days are unfortunately long gone. The prestige is certainly gone.

IDK The September Issue lost its meaning when those paintings on the covers came two years ago.

The issue is already on newsstands. I have mine. Feels weighty enough.

I love the main Justice Jackson portrait by Annie. Annie gets a lot of criticism for her lighting in portraits of folks with darker skin. I don't think that is warranted here (It isn't warranted in Annie VF feature last month with Val Demings on her motorcycle either)

The Kate Moss feature on her new tea line is OKish even though it also features Lila. (And worse, the Lila image is in black/white and her wearing a head dress a la Corrine Day's early photography of Kate)

Flipping through, I don't think there are many things that I'd like to purchase even if money was no object. None of that is Anna Wintour's fault however.

I blame the brands.

The print version has an extra blurb that says,
"Beacon of Hope: Ketanji Brown Jackson Makes Supreme
Court History".

Perhaps I’m in the minority but I thought the cover by Kerry James Marshall not only worked, it was suitably special for a September issue. Especially given what was going on in the country that summer, and given the long history of artist-painted covers, having an actually great, respected, contemporary Black American artist create an original painting for the cover felt like a great idea, at least to me. The Aurora James cover, on the other hand, was underwhelming.

Would've been nice, as a subscriber, to get the issue before, or at least at the same time, as it arrives on newsstands..
