Vanity Fair February 2017 : Chris Pratt by Mark Seliger

It's funny that most of the cover speaks to Donald Trump and he didn't get the cover!!

Hunky Chris, love his humor. But this cover looks like the sinking of the Titanic.

Trumpocalypse? Just give him the cover, and get over with the obsession!

Not the best shot of Chris, so basically i have no interest in this issue, which has been the case with most of their issues from last year, sigh!

What amuses me about this is that his Passenger's co-star Jennifer Lawrence had a Vanity Fair cover very similar to this not so long ago. The same idea, body submerged in water right up to the chest only her setting had more of a tropical feel with green palm leaves in the background. This could very well have been shot in a tropic locale too but the color scheme is different.

They're like bookends those two, so similar and yet it didn't really amount to much onscreen given the reviews Passengers wound up getting.

Hahaha, talk about Trump overload! Brace yourself, Graydon Carter just received a license to rant in each and every issue for the next four years.

Re Chris? He looks a bit old here, which is odd because he doesn't look like that at all irl. It's an ugly cover anyway. I used to like him until I found out how he and his wife just dump pets when they're fed up with them, so won't rush to get this. That Venice family feud sounds good though.

I actually like the cover. What a beautiful man. Sexy cover indeed.

The tag lines.... stop it already. It's borderline obsessive.

To be honest, what America needs right now is a positive tone. It's too much already.

I don't like him anymore after that story about the poor dog & his cat

^Didn't know that story, but that's really not done. My respect for him has dropped.

They did him wrong. I love him, but he looks better than he does on this cover. Still, he's a good choice since he's not overplayed or overexposed.

He's been a fixture on talk shows and men's magazines for the past few years (multiple issues of GQ and Men's Fitness, Esquire...) He's definitely moving into overexposed territory. And he's usually styled in earth tones, always going for a rugged/masculine look. The cover here is a nice change of pace, but the editorial photos are all same old, same old.

Despite the shot that's on the front, Chris is fully clothed inside, so maybe it's just a month where a man gets to flash the flesh on the cover, instead of the usual semi-dressed starlet.

I'm looking at the UK version, which is 122 pgs. There's a gatefold Gucci ad behind the cover (with tigers), plus 4 pgs Chanel with Arizona, the Bottega Veneta ad with Lauren Hutton, Prada with Jessica Chastain - but it's mostly ads for watches and the suchlike.

The Vanities girl is Matilda Lutz, I see Erik Madigan Heck is releasing a book of his work, and there's a short look at the media circus that was coverage of the US election, before diving into the Trump articles proper. "Trump's reality-distortion field made Steve Jobs's look like a modest test-drive."

One article is about the hunt for discrediting material about Trump, such as out-takes from The Apprentice. The next piece is about someone seeing young people's reaction to the election result, and how Trump's life could be re-imagined as a game of consequences (or lack of them, in some cases). Apparently there really was a Trump edition of Monopoly.

The Chris Pratt feature looks like it has no substance whatsoever. There's a profile of sisters Ivanka and Tiffany Trump, and what they've both done so far in life, then an article about Donald Trump Jr and his brother Eric. Then there's a look back at how Trump got his hands on the Palm Beach mansion, Mar-a-Lago, which feels more like a classic VF article about the rich and famous, rather than the magazine grinding a political axe.

Leaving Trump behind for a few pages, we move on to the tussle over Peggy Guggenheim's Venetian art collection, an elitist bookshop in London, and the last interview with society columnist "Suzy", or Aileen Mehle, who "was about to turn 96 when we embarked on this article, three years older than Wikipedia had her".

So a slim issue, but still with enough (non-Trump) articles to make me look forward to reading my subscription copy.

Thanks for the review, Tigerrouge!! ;)
I cannot wait to see what readers will think of this Trump mania. VF's letters pages can sometimes deliver the most interesting and obnoxious observations.
Hopefully this issue will have hit the newsstands by tomorrow.

I like what I consider the cool pinky "natural" make-up on Chris.

When moonlighting as a Clinique MA a couple years back women constantly asked for "neutral" make-up when I figured out they actually meant natural, well blended, fresh looking skin and were flexible on the color tones (cool, warm, neutral). Kim K favors neutral brown tones but the application is so heavy-handed as too look far from "natural". Chris has the upper hand on this ^_^

Anywhoo also appreciate the lighter hand with retouching on Chris's face. The rest of his body and the entire cover debacle I can't say.

I'm excited for EMH on his new book. His work is very hit or miss for me. I feel the same way about Tim Walker, moments of solitary brilliance amongst the clatter of background theatrics and lens gimmicks. Both excel when they remember to focus on the emotional resonance of their subjec. Both have prodused some of the most moving editorial images I've ever laid eyes on.

^Thanks tigerrouge for that EMH tibit.

Leibovitz rip-off much? There aren't many vocal Leibovitz fans on here (if at all) and a poor imitation certainly isn't helping her cause. But I've never been a huge Seliger fan or fond of seeing editorial images sans text.

Although that last image is quite beautiful. Lovely washes of purple, green and amber contrasted with that pop of white from Chris's under shirt. Wish his head had more air space in relation to the frame. He looks cramped and boxed in; not the desired effect for such a scenic location shoot.

Wonder who did the grooming, super subtle manly maquillage. Must be HD make-up :P
