Vanity Fair Holiday 2018 : Lin-Manuel Miranda by Ethan James Green

I think I'll applaud Ethan James Green for expanding creatively, that's the only good thing I see here. I want to like the stark studio setting with the quirky pose which looks like he's sitting on the bog, but once again the art direction...was that ladder really more important than Miranda? And circus coloured masthead yet again, lol.

The perfect companion to Emily’s Vogue cover.

:rofl: Emily on Vogue, Miranda on VF. Disney must've paid handsomely for these covers.

This seems a lot more like the old-style Vanity Fair, feels a lot less bookish than those earlier issues.

I cannot for the love of me warm up to a colorful masthead, it makes everything look so juvenile!

I'm not a fan of Lin-Manuel, so I'll take a hard pass on this one.
Kudos to Ethan for snatching his first VF cover tho.

This is why I say Anna isn't efficient as a consultant. A unbiased professional would easily have persuaded Radhika to run the Prince Charles and Camilla cover as an exclusive. And moved the Emily cover and shoot over to VF as it was more in their vein. She could always make it up to Emily later.

After Emily's cover, the Mary Poppins hype is now over and I doubt the cover with this guy will perform well. Typical Anna. Always looking out for #1.

This does feel like the good ol VF, even the content laid out seems like a throwback. Excited to see the issue now, but doubt it will actually be good.

Annie Leibovitz called; she wants her set back, Ethan.

Interesting idea, poor execution.
The strings behind him should have been erased ( they're over-exuberant with photoshop all the time, maybe use it once when it could have a positive effect).
His suit jacket should 've been straightened. It's rumpled up and makes him look pudgy.
And plastering text across the image doesn't hide the flaws.
I don't know why they didn't clean this up before printing.

^ Ditto. All of the elements for a great cover are here but they fell short as far as visual impact. That clunky, multi-color masthead looks amateur and ruins an otherwise exciting cover. Also would've curved the Lin-Maneul text for a more balanced, light-hearted mood.

I am enjoying the surrealist, Rene Magritte vibes with the use of props, puppet strings and gradient backdrop. Oh and Lin-Manuel is quite dashing here (even with his crotch area looking odd). James Green didn't quite pull this off. I think Max Vadukul would've nailed this cover. I miss seeing his work in VF.

I love that this VF effort finally feels like a proper magazine cover. Most of the other covers under Radhika looked like covers WIP, poster-like or belonged inside the issue. The upper left and lower right hand corners looks empty. I would've enlarged 'Jolly Holiday' and the '& More' to fill up the dead space.

Overall, a subtly festive, artistic, out of the box cover. I'm buying this issue of VF!
