Vanity Fair Italia February 2023 : Madonna by Luigi & Iango

The cover is bland, but the editorial is better & i like than Madge paid tribute to Frida Kahlo in a photo. The image with closeup could be better cover than the actual.

This looks more Dave lachapelle than his own recent work :innocent: but I love this cover + spread

I hate the whole output and it is nice to see gay duo L&I stepping out their monochromatic black and white comfort zone.

The cover is a joke, but the edit looks great. All thanks to Michael Philouze who I personally consider a strong menswear stylist.

Of course everything is very campy to the max and of course photoshopped to hell and back. Despite how great it is, I don't think it will 'trend' or 'break the internet' which is what Madonna is probably bargaining on. This cover will be a blip on the radar. Her time has passed.

saw yesterday at the supermarket....it's a long portfolio, there are some missing pics and it's separated by theme...religion,sex,etc...and also come with some articles about the shooting and about Madonna,etc...

I find it super interesting that this wasn’t a universal VF cover for the editions. They clearly don’t think it would resonate as well as Channing Tatum in markets…

Looking at it online, the Italian version is 124 pgs for this issue. It seems the concept of an "Icon Issue" will be repeated - the editor's letter talks about the first issue of every year having that theme?

The Madonna series is padded out with black pages with white text, announcing the theme of the next shot, you get 2 pgs of black, followed by 2-4 pgs of actual images. Other icons include Pedro Almodovar and John Galliano. These are more text-based interviews, followed by articles about the meaning of Madonna, also text-heavy.

The Italian version is a weekly mag, so if you want that one, it won't be around for long. If I were to get one, I'll probably go for the French or Spanish monthly edition. I'll be flicking through them online, when they come out, so I might report back in this thread if the contents vary greatly to this one.

Guinevere van Seenus is one of the models in this ed, according to her IG stories.

Americans hate her. Read the comments to this Robin Givhan article and the vitriol is merciless and utterly unfair: https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/01/17/madonna-celebration-tour/. And the American kidz she’s so desperately seeking approval from seems to dismiss her the most. It must hurt that these kidz have ignored her for their Rolling Stones 200 Most influential Performers of All Time List. Americans really want to erase her off the map. It’s a shame really because despite this caricature of the oversexed older woman she’s been marinating in for the last several years, her superior past remains untarnished, unchallenged, and unrivalled of any performer. I still adore that past, but I can’t stand her current self. And no— it’s not because of those tired accusations of sexism/misogyny/ageism blah blah blah: It’s as simple as with her the privileged experiences, worldly knowledge and influential accomplishments she’s afforded and fought so hard for— she’s so much better than her current late-life crisis of acting/dressing/behaving like a THOT 15yo brat raised on the shallowest cesspool of SM, facetuning herself to appear younger than how she even looked back in 1982 LOL I’m pushing 40, and thankfully, I’m no longer in the same place I was when I was 13yo back in the 90s when I fell in love with her (… God, Harlem Jean Harlow and Versace South Beach goddess of the Bedtime Stories era was so effortlessly gorgeous). So why these middle-age gayz are Yaaaaaasssssss Queen her on her current host mess is all kinds of secondhand embarrassing: She's so much better than this. She and these sycophants are such a solid reminder on how not to embarrass yourself by acting your age, not your shoe size.

The Rolling Stone list was made by the same people that always worked for the magazine. Crazy Beyoncé made it into the top 10, and other singers aren't there. But RS has the same identity crisis as Vogue, so I don't take them seriously at all.

^^^ That makes RS’s omission of her even more of a betrayal then, since they’ve always supported her in the past. That top 10 representation is so revealing of White guilt, like it’s still 1963 LOL

Rolling Stone/Vogue/MTV may have lost all credibility in their respective fields when they’re desperately pandering, virtue-signalling to the InstaGeneration. But they’re still all high-profile entities that the masses still recognize and hold as some authority of fashion/music/cultural relevance. You know, Anna’s Vogue in its current state may be irrelvant to TFS— until the March cover comes out with all your fav Supers in a foldout shot by Meisel. Then people will welcome Anna with open arms back… only for her to be irrelevant again when it’s Law Roach as the first Black man on the next cover of American Vogue LOL

^it's funny to read the Ozzy Osbourne part. Also there's some shade on Madonna if you read the Lady Gaga text (the only mention of her in the full list) to address she started as another Madonna copycat (like if the orinal is a bad influence) and then is a great singer since The Fame Monster. They really hate her. There's something missed here. Maybe she rejected a cover/interview, or something. It's notorious they are mad at her. And that top 10, like shame shame. There's no Gaga, Rihanna or Beyoncé without Madonna. You put Ozzy (he is great, but not the best vocal), American Idol singers and people that even Americans didn't knew about them, that list is the most random of all time and nobody asked for it.

Thought this was some stock photography considering how often this theme is used with her. Wish they had gone for a different vibe. She's an Icon but nothing Iconic or new about Madonna in a shocking religious theme. Some clean studio shots would have been shocking.

I would disagree about Beyonce, her main inspiration is more Janet, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Tina Turner etc

But the influence of Madonna on female power and open sexuality is huge. She paid the way. Beyoncé in the top 10 is insulting, she can't be above all those great singers you mention. She's next to Prince! Wtf, Prince eat her in terms of music and cultural impact. It's like making a list and putting (with all respect) Britney before The Beatles.

I think the reaction to Madonna is interesting. I personally am in the camp of appreciation of what she did, her legacy, etc, but do believe it’s being eroded by her current persona and her most recent work. I haven’t checked out the UK cover as yet but I’m going to assume we have Channing too.

I'm just going to say, that Donna Summer simulated an orgasm on a single before anyone even knew who Madonna was. Tina Turner had more raw sexuality than Madonna could ever dream of in some of her early performances. Madonna may be a huge influence on people, but she's not the only one. BY A LONG SHOT.

(But anyway, The Rolling Stone list is... a mess. You can't objectively compare singers in a million different genres with each other.)
