Vanity Fair US & UK September 2010 : Lady Gaga By Nick Knight

The cover is stunning, the color palette is phenomenal. Seriously, that nail polish is to DIE for. Not too fond of the peace sign, but it works. Its nice to see Gaga toned down a bit

These pictures are rather tepid and underwhelming considering that Nick Knight was behind them.

And the peace sign

Lady Gaga On Sex, Fame, Drugs, and Her Fans

Lady Gaga tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Lisa Robinson that she tries to avoid having sex because she is afraid of depleting her creative energy—“I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they’re going to take my creativity from me through my vagina.”

She also says that she doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t know if she ever will. Gaga tells Robinson, “I’m perpetually lonely. I’m lonely when I’m in relationships. It’s my condition as an artist.” Regarding men, she says, “I’m drawn to bad romances. And my song [“Bad Romance”] is about whether I go after those [sort of relationships] or if they find me. I’m quite celibate now; I don’t really get time to meet anyone.”

Gaga talks candidly about her drug use and recalls her ultimate low point: “I was completely mental and had just been through so much.” She had been using drugs, and is quick to tell Robinson that, if she writes about that incident, “I do not want my fans to ever emulate that or be that way. I don’t want my fans to think they have to be that way to be great. It’s in the past. It was a low point, and it led to disaster.”

Instead of rehab, though, when disaster struck, Gaga “went home.” She tells Robinson, “All I will say is I hit rock bottom, and it was enough to send a person over the edge. My mother knew the truth about that day, and she screamed so loud on the other end of the phone, I’ll never forget it. And she said, ‘I’m coming to get you.’” Gaga says they went to her 82-year-old grandmother’s house in West Virginia. “I cried. I told her I thought my life was over and I have no hope and I’ve worked so hard, and I knew I was good. What would I do now? And she said, ‘I’m gonna let you cry for a few more hours. And then after those few hours are up, you’re gonna stop crying, you’re gonna pick yourself up, you’re gonna go back to New York, and you’re gonna kick some ***.’”

Gaga also responds to the brouhaha surrounding her appearance at the Yankees game, and what she wore to her sister’s graduation; shows Robinson the contents of her bag; explains her devotion to her Little Monsters; and more.

The September issue of Vanity Fair will be available on newsstands in New York and L.A. on Wednesday, August 4, and nationally and on the iPad on Tuesday, August 10.

It’s my condition as an artist.

She's so over the top and ridiculous, but you kind of have to love it
...

oh dear...
i wish we could all have creativity
given to us during sex...there would be some
pretty talented people

^ That I have to say, though, is something that people tend to say about Gaga which irks me a little bit. Certainly Gaga (or the image she entertains) is very extravagant and colorful, sometimes bordering on the excessively strange, but if she ever happens to be anything less than 100% of the aforementioned, she's "bland". But if we pasted Jessica Biel or Natalie Portman's face over Gaga's on that cover, whatever adjectives that might evoke I would bet my car on it that 'bland' wouldn't be one of them.

Unless, of course, the argument is that Gaga needs to be whacko to the max to be at all interesting, which wouldn't necessarily be that unfair a claim. I just don't know that Gaga('s image) is that "extraordinary" anymore if she doesn't try another look from time to time, venture into even just the slightly less crazy. They do say that it's the exception that makes the rule.

I like how they kept the cover simple. I think it's one of the nicest shots of Gaga and I really love the gray hair.

Yes, but it's very hard to avoid this when you owe your fame to unqualified extravaganza...

Wow I wonder where those photos are from ...

Yeah a fan base and extreme stylist does not a talented singer make. I think Lady Gaga is a lot of what is wrong and right with music today. She has a good voice but the fact that she is considered revolutionary and different is imo a joke.

The photos are quite underwhelming coming from Nick Knight. The video is so much better and makes you think where that energy went. The shoot would be better as a video than an editorial.

That feature was less interesting than the one that talked about the contents of Ted Kennedy's desk.

The video of the shoot looks there was a real energy and playfulness about the images, she's really having fun, especially at the end... but then her ed just doesn't seem to have captured that? Shame really, as I think it's one of the best covers VF's had in a long, long time.

I love everything about this. I love the fact that she is stripped down on her cover but she still commands so much attention. It's an image that would capture my attention for sure.
