Vintage Magazine Discussion Thread

* moving this from the Miscellaneous magazines thread

I wish they were all like that, too!!! One of the guys I used to buy from raised his Vogue issues to about $39.00 and shot me an email complaining about how some buyers are ripping people off with their prices. Haven't bought a single issue from him in over 2 years!!

I've also experienced that with some sellers. There are was this girl who would sell her Verena's for about 8$. I messaged her and let her know that most people sell them for about 0,50$ and even less (cause so many Bulgarian people have them) but she told me that a real collector would know better than me and she basically told me to screw myself. :D

The most annoying thing about magazines on eBay is when the seller knows that they won't get a very good price for it - say three or four dollars, so what they do is fix the postage to some ridiculous price so they make money on that.

In the UK, I've actually asked sellers about this and why they ask £10 to ship a single issue within the UK (when another person can do it for £2.50) and they tell me that it's so they can make a big profit if the bids don't arrive.

LOL, that is sooo true! They'll sell an issue for ONLY $4.99, but the shipping is $15.00!!!!

That's ridiculous! But I think if you want to have a big collection you will have to pay for it. Still, I don't see myself buying a single magazine for more than 10$, I know that I'm a serious collector but I'm gonna find a way to lower the price. I'm not a person who knows how to negotiate a price but I think we should definitely teach the potential sellers what a good price is. :D I recently found this ebay store whose owner is a person with a lot of magazines and they are all good and rare ones. His prices are not bad but with the expensive delivery, I'd have to spend my whole salary on mags. And my hobby ain't paying my bills. :D

I can't bring myself to even think about what I've invested in vintage magazines. I'm not complaining, but sometimes the truth does hurt!

Speaking of that... I would really want to see a picture of your collection!

Here's my collection, Rosie! Not very exciting to look at, but they're all there! I basically remove each page from the issue and scan what I want to keep. Saves a lot of room that way!! :D

It's not what I expected.

What do you do with the pages - do you sell them, keep them in storage? I have everything on display in my bedroom and I'm running out of space... I need more, as I call it, magazine furniture.

I actually throw them away! :o I've regretted it a few times, but between magazines and my collection of art/photo books, it was too much. Although I have a few Vogue covers from the 70's that are too beautiful to toss so those I've kept.

I had an ex that used to use her Vogues as a coffee table legs. She put a piece of glass on top, looked very cool! :)

I'll actually pretend I didn't read that! Why do you throw them away when you could donate them to a poor Bulgarian girl who's willing to fill every inch of her house with magazines? :D:D

I kept my magazines from the late eighties until a few years ago & since then I have been systematically tearing them & scanning them & then I discard them. My recycle bin is full of "clippings". The older I have gotten the less important to me is the ownership of the magazine. I have been a magazine junkie since I was 9 years old - so the cost doesn't bother me - but I do have a budget - LOL!

Comes down to budget and space. And not necessarily in that order!

I can empathize with the need for space and budget concerns.
With my first collection I did tear sheets and discarded what I wasn't interested in ( I regret that now ).
When I moved cross country, boxes were lost and in them my entire collection.
I started to rebuild my collection years ago and after scanning what I liked, I sold the others on eBay.
Now I'm trying to build a collection for a third time and it seems more challenging to find scarce issues and even more expensive.
I refuse to throw anything out now. Even stuff I don't really like.
I'd rather become one of those hoarders who only have small crevices in their homes to walk through ( it's not that bad, I just have half a closet stacked right now).
Being on this forum and buying and selling on my own makes me really appreciate how difficult it can be to obtain magazines.
That's one of the reasons I'm so grateful tfs members share their collections here. So hard to find otherwise.
Huge hugs to all of you!!

Do you guys go through vintage magazines and find one of those perfume samples and find out they are still super fragrant? I just found two of those - one by Christian Dior and the other was Very Valentino. Do you know if there is a difference between the 90s version of Very Valentino and the current one? Because if there isn't I'd really like to buy it. ^_^

ProQuest is creating the first digital archive of Harper’s Bazaar, spanning 1867 through the current issue. Research outcomes in areas as wide-ranging as fashion, design, art, women’s studies, gender studies, marketing, and business will be improved through simple online access and precision searching of both text and images from the magazine’s entire run. Accessible later this year on the ProQuest platform, the archive will be cross-searchable along with the Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily archives.

Showstudio has this enlightening video on Vintage Magazines about about Ritz, Interview, Nova & more. I have never heard of some of these publications but the impact and influence these magazine have is apparent today. What I would do to get my hands on that issue of Nova - that Issey Miyake story is brilliant. I thought I would share with you all how know so much more about this topic then me :flower:

Hi! I don't think this question belongs here but I don'w know where to ask and I'm sure that someone here will know the answer!

I'm visiting NYC this month and I was hoping that someone would tell me good stores where I can find vintage magazines or past issues!

Thanks!
