Vogue China April 2025 : Liu Wen by Sean+Seng

Never understood why Sean and Seng didn’t take off, I’ve always enjoyed their work a lot and it is very polished in a good way.
Agreed! Love their work in Pop in the early 2010’s especially!

These look like polished campaign shots than the usual boring editorial photos from the recent issues of Vogue.

Vogue China has the best covers lately! Jiahui Zhang last month, He Cong in February, now Liu Wen. Liu is such an awesome model, she can never do wrong. I love, love, love her. That portrait of her in the grey cape is simply stunning.

The very obvious fake sets are charming. But they’re unable to take it just that extra step creatively, and transcend the mere good imagery to high fashion vision to be worthy of remembrance. Even more so that it takes two people to conjure all this, and they still can’t make it there; but never been fond of fashion duos even the best of duos can’t compare to the lone Great. And maybe that’s why they never took off. That, and politics.

They’re technically competent and even creatively solid; they know how to create and produce a mood, and set a narrative tone; Although they’re more or less a more commercial but lesser version of Mert & Marcus/I&V/Bruce Weber. Which unfortunately puts them in a nether region of being too creative with their fashion references for the children raised on socials, and too lacking in originality to hang with the iconic names for us b!tches with too high standards. But they’re superior in every way to the overhyped lessers Tyler/Nadine/Zoe etc.

I agree somewhat, but also M&M and I&V in their beginnings were not that great and polished, but very creative indeed. S&S had a great start, without even looking up anything I can clearly remember their images with Anna Ewers + her wet saliva lips, Stoya naked for POP and Lana with the bee on her lip. I do disagree that they are not creative enough, but I would rather say they just hit the wrong vibe and the wrong time. There is no theatrics and energy that is Carlijn, Roe, Johnny Dufort and whatever else.

Their style is very calculated and very low-energy, it is very clinical. I wouldn't compared them to Bruce, but M&M is clearly there. To me it reads more like a M&M with a hint of Wolfgang Tillmans or Juergen even in there with the intentional imperfections. M&M are polished to the brim, S&S have a lot of photoshop, but their composition always has some slight imperfection that I enjoy immensely.

Personally, when they were at their best, all the Juergen/Meisel knock-offs took the wheel (Comte and others above, Weir, Ethridge and so on), and people demanded something raw, energetic, unpolished or very theatrical, the "party pics" era of M&M also hit that wave alongside. So they missed the mark and never really took off huge.

Still a shame. They are commercial, but just a bit artsy enough not to make it boring. Edited and photoshopped, but not just over the edge. Sexy and glamorous, but not in a stale, outdated way, yet still mainstream appeal is there. Well, I am not their agent, so... best of luck to them, but we have enough fresh blood coming in right now.

I don't understand the styling either, what's the connection between sporty looks/sculptural knitwear/draped jersey/whatever that awful striped pants look is?

Like what's the point? It's rather disjointed.
