Vogue Italia November 2009 : Rianne ten Haken by Steven Meisel

Horrible but somehow fetching...interesting. Close to psychedelic, but not quite. I think I like it.

I just realized this: Rianne looks like some sort of comic book heroine on the cover. There is something very comic-like about her piercing gaze and her radioactive hair. Plus, the coloring and shading make the image look like an illustration rather than a photograph. She's almost like a sexy Mary Jane from Spiderman. Or a wicked villainess with evil glaring powers !

^^ I completely see it vavavinny, I think Berlin mentioned it first, I think it's the saturation of the colours on the cover.

The ed is called 'Air Supply'

elitemodel.it

It reminds me of Red Sonja and those sorts or comics. I'm torn on the cover and I feel like I've seen this ed a million times before, but hopefully the rest of the contents will be as good as the last issue.

Wow Riannes ed blew me away pure Meisel magic, very captivating shoot and the styling is amazing, excited to what other goodies are in this issue:D

Amazing editorial! The cover looks too similar to last months, but still great to see a vet, even if it is the same one as last time

I love it! I keep coming back to this thread to look at it, thinking how great it will look on my coffee table

okay, so im not the only one! hahaha
- i completely forgot she shared the cover last month with karlie.

why is Steven Meisel so obsessed with Rianne again and why can't he feel the same way about Daria? I don't like the cover, it looks blurry.

Great to see Rianne on the cover again! Her comeback was definitely a highlight for me this season because it's been a long time coming.

ugh i feel the same way about Maryna
i want to see her on another VI cover

Wow back to back cover, not really liking the cover but the ed looks good.

I don't know, I think I like it. It's probably going to be something where you look back at it and is able to appreciate it more. The ed is good too. Although that picture where Rianne is putting a breathing mask to that guy's face and there are people in white behind her, her face looks gross. She's like the joker with that makeup, hair, expression, etc.

I think the key to the cover is the initial discordant reaction.

It's clearly styled with 80's signifiers. Just look at those earings! But it has a deathly feel. It's also finished/unfinished looking like student work: no commercial retoucher would leave eyes that badly overdone, skintones that unfinished, post-processing quite that fried. So there's irony. It's not of a conventional commercial aesthetic. It's rough edged.

To those who felt it not very Italian Vogue. OK it's not Amercian Vogue, nor probbaly any other, but Italian Vogue - well it is - therein lies your answer.

In winter one perhaps should speak of death. Of trends. It is the season when one of nature's cycles dies. Recall Lee's bonfire of show props; his funereal pire - yet, with the tarot, a new beginning in death, a recycling.

For we've already seen the 80s revisit's demise, eased out for a nature ravaged, minimal, avante-garde SS10. The shoulder now a found object for Rei's collage. Miuccha rough sheering the business suit for other uses. The banker a disgraced form. V&R taking a chainsaw to Carrollian prom dresses. The bonfire of all that 80's conspicuous consumption and financial markets worship. The preppy city whizz-girl shot down in her own Flaming Ferrari. Everything overcooked, ablaze. Again. Margaret Thatcher as Guy Fawkes. Perhaps.

So the style foretells the death fate of the trend to which it speaks. It's fin-de-decade.

Just a few thoughts

Oopsies! I didn't see BerlinRocks post when I wrote that! Sorry for stealing your assertion Berlin! I swear I didn't mean to ^_^!

Just clocked the ed story.

Must say I do like the way 80's girl has collapsed overheated and the sciencey guys/ men in white coats have made a beeline for flowing in a more aqua world.

Water over fire. Elementary.

she looks a little like "chucky" on the cover......but i still like it!!
