All those people who complain about Meisel's name being mentioned in every new thread about the magazine forget that there were decades of cover stories like this being produced by the man.
And the emotional attachment you have to those memories is not easily cast aside. Meisel was the photographer who got me interested in fashion imagery in the first place, never mind the world I encountered when I found Vogue Italia on sale in my nowheresville town. It was February 1991, the first issue I ever saw.
And nearly every cover story contained some visual reference to a person, a film, a photographer. Something or someone worth knowing. Each issue, I was given a thread to follow, and I got an education in return.
So as a teenager, I lived for Vogue Italia. And we're all older now, and all the magic has gone out of the world. But with a mention of Meisel's name, I can still remember what I felt when I saw his work.
And he's still capable of turning up, from time to time, to produce something worth looking at. Yes, he's been around so long, he's referencing himself. But when it comes to Meisel, there's a lot to remember. And no amount of whinging about him is going to diminish that for me.
Besides, the present day state of fashion photography does not contain much that surpasses the past. Wake me up when it does.
