Bluntly - they had EICs who, for all their other faults, had a vision and could get it executed, and they weren't afraid to ruffle a few feathers if they had to. Those women left/died (RIP Franca), and their replacements just didn't have the same calibre of vision, now the people in charge have even less. I mean, can you imagine any edition of Vogue or even i-D (a magazine that positions itself as more cutting-edge) running that plastic surgery story now? Or the oil slick story?
