Vogue Paris December 2016/January 2017 : Karl Lagerfeld & Lily-Rose Depp by Hedi Slimane

Lily´s pose and expression just ruin the cover imo. Otherwise I like the styling and that it´s in B&W, I just didn´t know that the "heroin chic" look was back...

Did he deserve better? This cover is clearly an ad for Chanel, that i presume he approved. The fact no one bothers(or can) photograph Karl as a human being, but settle for this mummy image he sells as a brand, tell us all we need to know about the intentions of all of those involved when creating this cover.

That is true! Plenty of blame to go around, but I do feel like Hedi has done better portraits of him in the past. And in fact Karl, and his team, have done better self portraits than this. To me this is a disaster! This is outtake worthy at best, and even if Karl liked this shot, Alt as an EIC has the power to say; this is not cover worthy! Yet it went through.

From what i read about him, Karl can be swayed to produce good shots, and i would expect someone like Hedi, whom Karl has outmost respect for, would be able to get more out of him.

Seriously, when i read the title, i expected something similar to the Carine/Tom/Daphne cover.
I mean, this looks like a candid and not a special cover. Let's be honest, Karl will not have many Special issue of Vogue Paris anymore.

The retouching Hedi did is atrocious. I would have prefered a Karl only cover...But then, he did a cover by Hedi for V already this year...

I love Karl very much but i can't with this cover. I doubt that Karl had a lot to say considering that it's done by Hedi...

I hope there's a lot of covers because it's sad.

I guess we can expect a lot of Chanel & Fendi in this issue. Bernard Arnault and the Weirthemers should be very happy about this issue...
I'll buy it anyway...For the love of Karl.

I'll be surprised if there's anything new in this issue. We all know the routine by now - the Chanel motifs and Karl's favourites. In the recent past - the cat, the book collection. Maybe a detour into his (more interesting) past, if his ego allows it, but that idea is likely to be dismissed by him stating he's "only interested in what's happening today".

Throw in some witty ten-word comments about things he doesn't like, and lavish praise for people too young to have yet achieved much in life, and the only thing left is the photography, and we can probably guess what that will look like.

I want to be proved wrong - me being incorrect in saying any of this would be a great outcome. If only Karl could give up a little bit of control over his universe, blend it with the visions of other people, and by doing that, shine a new light on his contributions to the world of fashion.

If it's supposed to be sad, then it's perfect.

Looking back at past guest editor December covers from Miro, Baryshnikov, David Hockney, Nelson Mandela; the December covers used to be so celebratory.
This cover is just ghastly.
Lagerfeld looks like he should be hosting a late night ghoul movie festival.

Yes, yes, yes! I now realise that the premise of a special Karl issue right now doesn't in fact hold a lot of promise. There's very few iconic houses today which spans over decades, and whose creative head seems obsessed with muses. So give us a foldout with him on the front cover and the girls from old to new, spread on ladders. That's how you pay tribute to the cult of Karl/Chanel. But as you say, he only looks ahead when in fact, there's so much to draw from the past. It would be interesting to see how Alt handled his direction. Whether she laid out any prerequisites, or just had to let him go mad.

Someone posted some candids of him and Kristen Stewart, my guess is this will be a cover, and maybe even a third with Kendall & Gigi. There you have his current obsessions in a nutshell.

It's sad to see that this is how Alt thinks the magazine should stay relevant... It's a shame because they seem to produce great stuff (Iselin's cover) too but in minimal numbers... I am sort of giving up on VP and this saddens me...

Designers are getting the boot left and right, perhaps it's time for editors to go as well.

I don't think this is a multi-covers issue, when VP has multi-covers everything is released the same day.

More info on the content...
Interviews with long-term friends and muses from Vanessa Paradis and Charlotte Casiraghi, to Kristen Stewart and Lily-Rose Depp reveal a generosity and humor famed in the fashion world and provide a few clues to his success. It's a very personal issue, featuring his current obsessions, black and white photography work and adored cat Choupette, as well as plenty more surprises from the man himself.

Quite disappointed by the cover too and think it's so uneventful, pedestrian and generic! I honestly didn't know what to expect when I heard Karl Lagerfeld was guest editing this year but I should've known. It's not the most flattering image of Lily-Rose Depp and the over-airbrushing on Karl himself is just ridiculous and far too blatant.

Nevertheless, the previews sure do have me excited to see the contents. I love the look of Kristen's feature and the David Sims story looks right up my street.
