Vogue Ukraine launching in 2013

^Haha. That's pretty terrible, but I like how they're thinking.

BTW, that article on tFS about this is really condescending.

It's always fun to see what a new edition of Vogue will do. And I think Vogue Ukraine could do well, especially since they have quite a few good models. My main hope is that they support models from their country rather then relying mainly on international models.

On another slightly-Vogue related note, I'm a bit surprised that Vogue doesn't have any editions in the Middle East (well, besides Vogue Turkey). Like in Israel or something. It's actually a rather stylish country. But I suppose it's probably about politics more then anything else.

BTW, some more opinions from Ukrainian fashion insiders about the upcoming Vogue and who should be on the cover.

"I think the debut cover should not be graced by a model. It should be a figure who is the face of fashion in Ukraine. A woman who is a symbol of Ukraine."
Sergei Byzov, creative direct of The Icon

"On the cover of the first issue, I personally envision Snejana Onopka. Or Ludmila Yanukovich (Ukraine's First Lady), whose interview would create a great demand."
Yulia Magdich, owner of the store Stchastie

"On the cover of the first issue, I'd like to see a Ukrainian face. The list of contenders can be substantial, and the choice for the editors in this case, very difficult."
Masha Shubina, artist

I'll be honest, I don't really know who the popular celebrities are in the Ukraine (and I'd love it if someone could educate me on this) but I'm a little surprised with Sergei Byzov's response. I would think a model would be a better fit for a first cover then a random celebrity, well, unless this person is really relevant to Ukrainian women. Because at least a model can show off the clothes...which helps market them as a fashion magazine not a typical "celebrity" magazine cover. Though, perhaps someone who knows more about the culture/famous people in the Ukraine, could tell me who they consider a "symbol" of the country? But I do think whomever they choose for the first cover should be Ukrainian... it's always important to provide opportunities for your own.

^ well the most popular celebrity ukrainian nowadays is Mila Kunis. And when i think about whom from ukrainians they can put on the cover of Fashion magazine, nobody comes to my head. ONLY models please.

Would love it if Natalia Chabanenko got the cover. I just hope VU doesn't turn into what Vogue Russia is today.

Definitely hoping for Snejana. She tends to be part of iconic images...

YonihaAliza, I can't really think of one Ukrainian celebrity woman who could be 'the face' of the country, other than Yulia Tymoshenko, but I don't think the timing for her is right to be on covers of fashion magazinse. As far as Ukrainian celebrities with international appeal, I'd say Olga Kurylenko comes close, plus she has some fashion roots. Mila Kunis and Milla Jovovich are possible contenders, but they seem somewhat removed from Ukraine. But I agree with you, if the editors want to position the magazine as a HF magazine rather than a gossip rag, they will need to pick a HF model for the first cover.

Thank you MyNameIs for your insight! Milla and Mila are like you said, probably the most recognizable Ukrainian's (especially for people outside of the Ukraine), but I don't know if they would sit for the magazine. At least not for the first cover. Anyways, it'll be interesting to see what direction Vogue Ukraine goes in.

Some more Ukrainian "insiders" talking about the upcoming edition, I'll post their thoughts on who should cover the first issue.

"If we're talking about the model for the first issue, I envision Alla Kostromichova with blond curly hair."
Dasha Lahenberg, stylist

"For the debut cover, I always wanted to see a drawing, but of whom... that's complicated. I want Daria Shapovalova to be on the first cover."
Sasha Samsonova, photographer

"On the debut cover, I'd like to see Kate Moss with a wreath against a blue and yellow background."
Liza Fruman, co-owner of Otrada

"On the first cover, of course I would want to see a girl from Ukraine. Who is she? - there's a ton of possibilities. My vote goes for Alla Kostromichova."
Kostya Omelya, designer

"Who will be on the first cover, I have not the slightest idea. There's probably a "brand-book" [?] where this is being discussed. Of course there is the editor in chief who will decide, but I hope for it to be someone memorable, not just a famous face. So that you would want to open the magazine regardless of the name on the front."
Bob Basset, designer

"On the first cover, I'd like to see Naomi Campbell in a Ukrainian national dress."
Yana Chervinskaya, designer

"The debut cover is very representative for every publication, and therefore I think it'd be proper to have a Ukrainian top model with international name recognition - of which we have plenty."
Moi Sofism, photographer

"The most logical for the first issue would be to pick a Ukrainian top model with international status. Names such as Snejana Onopka, Viktoriya Sasonkina and Juju Ivanyuk, they need no further introduction."
Svetlana Bevza, designer

"Regarding the debut cover - I'm not convinced it's best to start with one of the top Ukrainian models. I really liked the first issue of Esquire, everyone loves Gary Oldman."
Valeria Kovalska, designer

"On the cover of the first issue, I'd like see a pregnant Giselle Bunchen."
Asya Mhitryan, Valentino boutique owner
(lol, she says she wants the magazine to be about fashion and not social gossip, but wants a pregnant Giselle on the cover, lol)

honestly, i dont think any ukrainean model would put ukraine vogue on the map. if vogue ukraine focus more on ukrainean models then they will be going nowhere except being a local magazine like vogue india, vogue taiwan and they are pretty much irrelevant on the international scene.

vogue turkey which launched 2 years ago is doing extremely well bc they put relevant models on the covers and it pays off.

im still rooting for a supermodel to grace the first issue. at this moment i dont see any ukrainean model who has the power to give vogue ukraine the buzz and hype.

Daria W has Ukrainian heritage, but she's sort of fallen off the map really...I liked the idea of Naomi in a Ukrainian national dress

Are they looking to be "on the map" internationally, though? Aside from those like American Vogue, Vogue Paris, etc. I think the majority of magazines are targeted for a local audience anyway. Everyone on tFS loves Vogue Turkey, but does that do much for their international sales?

I don't see why a Ukrainian model wouldn't work. If they're good enough for VP and VI, why aren't they good enough for VU?

^ also we're only talking about an ukrainian model on the first cover, right? not every cover like Vogue India and Taiwan do

Ukraine obviously hasn't as many top models as countries like Netherlands or Brazil, it's just the first issue for being so special that should feature an ukrainian and then get any supermodel they want to keep the magazine relevant..

she definitely has not fallen off the map. she has scored 3 vogue covers in the last 5 months(paris, australia and japan) and her campaigns are as abundance as before. and im pretty sure she wil be on the cover of vogue netherland soon.

people dont talk much about her bc she doesnt go to any public event...not even a single one in the last one-two years.

imagine how much buzz would vogue ukraine get if they put a combination of giselle, daria and kate moss together or lara, daria and natalia.

AAside from those like American Vogue, Vogue Paris, etc. I think the majority of magazines are targeted for a local audience anyway.
Exactly. Even American Vogue is completely about American standards of fashion, and don't get me started on Vogue Brazil, while the country is mostly known for its models, their fashion scene is immense, relevant for the people designs are created for and the magazine represents that by being 100% devoted to Brazilian talent (designers, photographers, models, etc), rarely bothering to 'flirt' with international readers by putting seasonal 'must-haves' from abroad all the time. Although I personally do wish we'd get more Vogue Turkeys just for the fun of it, I still think Vogue is a fantastic platform to promote fashion in a country where it must be generating some revenue (CN doesn't strike me as fond of suicidal missions) and just work as an incentive to consume more and strengthen local businesses/designers/buyers/etc. That's what Vogue is all about for me and even though I cannot name a Ukrainian designer either, I don't think it's really important if people outside of Ukraine can name one or not as long as people over there can or the launch of this magazine has precisely that purpose. I do hear about Ukrainian Fashion Week every time it takes place though..

As for cover model choices, I definitely think it would help them a lot to start off with Daria, she's close to her Ukrainian origin and I think that's what matters, that's she's not a stranger to the culture and probably cares for a bit of progress there. I can't stand Snejana, I was indifferent to her until the fanaticism here repulsed me and I ended up detesting her face, but she's definitely another viable option for a good start. Same for Alla Kostromicheva.. who'd make such a statement about modern beauty.

actually i have to disagree. editions of vogue like spain, turkey, paris, italia, japan, korea, hellas, us, uk are all use models of the moment for their contents and covers rather than local models.

the only vogue edition which have lots of local flavors are vogue brazil, india, and russia.

^ what are you disagreeing with?, I'm not model-centered.. when I talked about American Vogue I was expanding more on what Tina mentioned about magazines targeting national/local readers through their content.. even the designers they advertise, and this happens in every Vogue actually, not just Brazil, India or Russia.. actually I don't think Russia does this at all.

Then I talked about Ukrainian models that could potentially be good for a debut issue. You certainly can't go on local flavor for very long only when there aren't even 12 Ukrainian top models in the international scene right now.

Comparing the potential use of VUkraine's 'local' models to that of VIndia or VTaiwan is absurd. There are at least a handful of Ukrainian models who have legitimate international careers and who appear in and on other editions of Vogue. And as others have said, nobody is saying that VUkraine should have a Ukrainian model on every cover, but at least on the debut one - and there are viable options there to start the magazine on a good note.
