W February 2016 : The Movie Issue by Peter Lindbergh

Beige beige beige milk toast milk toast white white white. Yawn.
Plus, most of the actors look spiritless and fatigued.

LOL at Bradley Cooper being in the Movie issue when he had three flops in a row last year...

Boring white people issue.

Man I love Eddie Redmayne but photographs only emphasize how bad he's aging -- he always looks chapped lipped and his skin looks jaundiced.

Brie Larson is the only cover choice that feels fresh.

I can never get over the idea that actors, who make a career of creating emotion and excitement in motion pictures, always look so flat and boring in magazines.
It's very rare that any actor or entertainer can work multiple mediums and really excel.
I don't care what anyone says, they just can't do the job the way professional models can.

So white. Of course this isn't W's fault, but it sure does highlight this problem in film.

W is very much a contributor to the problem.

Here are some people of colour who had a great year in Hollywood.

John Boyega from Star Wars
Oscar Isaac from Star Wars
Samuel L Jackson, Hateful Eight
Lupita Nyongo from Star Wars -- also a fashion darling.
Michael B. Jordan in Creed - oh just rave reviews for his performance, that's all, plus he's young and fit.
Mindy Kaling was in Inside Out- #7 movie of the year.
Will Smith, Concussion, Focus. He really worked hard on his body for Focus and looked amazing.
Anyone from Straight outta Compton
Idris Elba, Beasts of No Nation
Twitch and Donald Glover and Adam Rodriguez from Magic Mike XXL -- why the hell not? It was my favourite movie this year.
Benicio Del Toro - Sicario - rave reviews and a gorgeous hunk of a man
Melissa McCarthy - Spy - I didn't love the movie but apparently others did, for body diversity , also released a fashion line

W CHOOSES what it shows in its magazines. It makes these choices deliberately. It wants to brand itself as something in particular to a particular audience. How can somebody say W has no fault in this.

Do you know that these magazines can publish an editorial of ALL people of colour, let alone just 1-5% of the editorial? And nobody would die? Yet these magazines act like people would actually die if they dared publish such a thing. No reason why the American fashion community has to push white actors constantly. The British actors aren't even American so one can't argue that it's about pushing American born actors. And a lot of the people of colour ARE born in America.

I see that Benicio and Samuel made the cut -- again it's gotta be like 1-5% of the editorial total

Just looked up San Andreas which starred The Rock -- made a box office of $473.8 million on a budget of $110.
Tessa Thompson is insanely beautiful and co-starred in Creed.

Looking at the covers. They do indeed look extremely white washed almost uncomfortably so and i'm one of those people who dislikes the idea of a "token" person of color but America no longer looks anything like what W is showcasing on these covers and IT IS W to blame. There has certainly been enough prominent roles filled by other ethnicities this year. This not only doesn't look like America but it doesn't even look like Hollywood anymore. With the importance of the over seas box office even Hollywood has become more inclusive than this.

Classic Lindbergh, what could go wrong? As many people discussed wish there were more of a variety in the choice of actors, as the some Oscar worthy characters were done by people of color. Who knows if this selection of actors were intentional to highlight the problem we have in the movie industry.

Most of these actors can't model at all, and the choices of some actors is a bit strange

Btw I do agree about Eddie looking like he has chapped lips all the time, I've always thought that

They made Saoirse look so much older than she is?
yeah, totally, she looks like a republican first lady.

i'm not particularly crazy about either of these covers, but the portraits inside are nice. nothing more though, and i would also appreciate more variety. it feels like the industry is recycling the same people over and over and most of these people are becoming REALLY boring to look at.

The covers look pretty non-committal, like Lindbergh doing Roversi. I do like the moonlighting on Rooney's cover.

Do my eyes fool me or is that new W logo cover placement? I like if so. More dynamic, pulled together feel the way the logo interacts with the white border.

Typical McDean under Tonchi fare. There's too much background noise, set distraction; really takes away from the already weak selection of garments chosen for the shoot.

It's pretty pointless doing these ensemble model shoots when there's zero chemistry, personal interaction between the girls and no strong visual message created by these groupings in the same frame.

HOW ON EARTH was 2015 a breakthrough year for Rooney Mara and Carey Mulligan!?!? Both of them have been around for years - their big breakthroughs were The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and An Education. It's not that I'm not glad to see them, because I am, but it's just weird.
The same for Eddie as well. He does look BEAUTIFUL though  What a man!

The editorial is lovely, but incredibly white. Where is the diversity, W? Haven't you heard of the biggest movie of the year - Star Wars?. Because surely John Boyega and Oscar Isaac deserved a feature. What about Idris Elba who will surely get an Oscar nomination. Or Tessa Tompson? Gugu Mbatha-Raw?
And don't get me wrong, I do love the usual featured stars like Cate, Bradley and Jake and I'm very glad to see Peter Sarsgaard (so underrated) and Domhnall but some diversity would be glady appreciated!

"Day Dreams" is the only fashion ed in this issue.

152 pages

not to sound like a broken record but there were some exceptional performances by people of colour yet the covers tell another story. Thats where my interest ends

So cool to see Tami and Karly, I love them both ! As for the actors' pictures, I really like the framing and the contrasts, really good photographs :)
