W June/July 2017 : Natalia Vodianova by Steven Meisel

^ a short review?

The Meisel ed is the only proper ed in this issue. There is a feature on Haider Ackermann with two photos of Natalia by Roversi, a feature on Natalia at home shot by Patrick Demarchlier; old photos of Natalia by Bruce Weber; and a photo of Natalia with Stella McCartney. A good issue if you like Natalia

Might just be the first issue of W Magazine which I purchase in forever, since the outcome of everything here is just wonderful. From the fact Steven Meisel shot the cover, to the fact the shoot reminds me of how fantastic a model Natalia Vodianova truly is!

On the one hand, it’s a novel concept of featuring only one model that the other mainstream fashion publications would never attempt, so for once— Stephano deserves some credit.

On the other hand, she is married to one of the most powerful man in fashion, so it totally feels like lip service to a generous employer…

And somewhere between all that is a nice portfolio of Natalia’s career. The Meisel shoot does nothing for me: It is very nice of course, but it’s also very Meisel standard-fare— even looking like something dusted off from the mid-2000s. The Bruce port is the best and reminds me of why she is such a great presence in high fashion— just wished the layout wasn’t that annoying scrapbook that tries to fit in a hundred shots to a page.

If only the concept of an entire issue dedicated to a Super is a regular feature for W… Likely not since unless another one of these Supers is married to a powerful figure in the industry, they’re not getting their own feature issue.

(Such a flimsy issue at just a tad over 100 pages! Feels more like a supplement issue.)

less than 100 pages? jesus... whats happening with this mag! last month it was 110 pages i think. I miss the articles and more text - now we only have images!

They'll sink down to 50 pages and they still won't be shut down! I think it's just because W looks nice on CN's roster, and that's that.

Re this Natalia special edition, I won't begrudge her that. Ipersonally won't be getting this issue though. She had a great career and all, but her name is certainly not the first which comes to mind when you brainstorm such an idea. She's certainly not a supermodel. Last I've heard her solo US Vogue couture cover sold poorly, as did her VF style cover. So getting this must have something to do with the Arnaults. Normally these type of special editions are reserved for Kate and Naomi because they have the diversity in modelling and career span to back that up. I recall Vogue Australia also used to do these single model issues a while back, and every time whoever they chose followed through with great features. It can work, but I think the storyline we'll be spoon-fed here (more important than her editorials here) isn't original at all.

In order to survive, W would need to increase their audience. And it's such a mystery because the EIC's vision is evident and they're still booking high profile photographers and celebrities. But if the editing is poor, all of that will count for naught. Hopefully now that Edward left, someone new will come in with fresh ideas to turn this magazine around. I wouldn't be opposed to immensely commercial covers if it means that they can run wild with editorial ideas. That was after all McCarthy's concept, and it worked. He had Angelina, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth rounded out y supers, but everyone knew it's what's inside that mattered.

Thought it looked familiar.

It seems like Conde Nast has been cutting their expenses on quality printing! W's front and back covers are so loosely sticked to the magazine spine I'm just waiting for it to fall apart (and it's not my copy only). Not to mention how images look snowy and not crystal clear. It's such a shame, especially for us, the collectors...

i feel the struggle! i get too upset when fresh magazines i've bought start falling apart. I don't know if it's just how they stack W at my newsagent but it's really hard to find one that's not bent and with small tears because it's so flimsy.

I gave up buying this edition here in Brazil. Very thin and very expensive - probably four times the amount paid in dollars.

In Mexico it must be like three times the original price. It's just not worth it for me since this magazine looks like it was bound with gift wrap and a Pritt stick. The pages inside couldn't be any thinner or the print any blurrier or dull.

Can totally understand everyone's frustration toward the magazine's horrendous quality!

I haven't bought W in years but was pretty horrified at the quality when I went for a copy of this particular issue last week. For such a wonderful cover shoot with Natalia by Meisel, the atrocious quality of the paper failed to do it justice - and it looks better online in the website's HQ format. Thankfully I managed to source an OK copy from the shelves! Now, however, I won't be in such a rush to get future issues.
