What coat are you buying this winter?

Definitely waiting to buy a coat in the sales - especially seeing as the coldest months here are typically Jan and Feb. That said I did buy a Lanvin coat from their pre-fall collection - it's a fabulous wool trench - slightly military in cut and colour with a detachable mink collar. I bought it in July and it hasn't as yet been cold enough to wear. I am on the look out for something a bit more easy going and warmer in the sales. In the UK and the States - the winter sales often start before Christmas !!!! Not wishing my life away or anything but that's not too long to wait....

Meg,love the black one as well. I like the red one too but I must agree about the shape of that collar. Of course, you could always mimic Catherine Deneuve in "Belle de Jour" this winter :p

Edit: her style that is!!

I believe that this one was sold out long time ago. There are a few here and there but the majority are gone once they hit the stores.

I bought a J.Crew 3/4 length wool coat with Thinsulate lining. Yay!
This might be the first winter that I'm not cold! :D

versus Margiela's

I wasn't that into it in the men.style.com article because it looked way too familiar even before the season began in earnest. So many labels have had toggle coats through the years. I'm sure Margiela's might have more interesting new details, but I can't see it just from the pic though. And at that price, I better love it! :flower:

Perhaps a cool trench? Nothing has really stood out for me this season. I may check out Costume National and see what they have. What are you looking into getting, faust, if you're getting anything this season?

Bakla,

after seeing this in person, I am VERY disappointed. I did not try it on, but that's because I did not want to bother after looking at it. It did not look like a designer quality coat by any means. It was very heavy, not lined (IIRC), very rough wool. The Dries coats on the next rack were much more appealing and $500 less...

Yeah, faust, I saw pieces at both Jeffrey & Barneys, and I thought about you when I saw them. Truth to tell, I don't really hold Margiela up to high standards of tailoring - his fit is sometimes iffy, usually too large, and really spotty - some things are great, others are downright terrible (a scratchy wool sweater with a design ripped off from John Bartlett's collection two seasons before left me wondering about how much control he has over his design team). I think he's good for cult fashion / higher end sportswear, but I don't really consider Margiela a designer level brand. I think his women's line may be better, but I really haven't looked enough to form an opinion.

this coat never made it to the floor at barneys, they were all pre ordered through the trunk show. and why? who knows i think its a little too overwhelming. it was also 10,000 i believe

I would like to get something like this coat:

something like a well tailored long peacoat...but more reasonably priced than the Dior Homme one. Anyone have any suggestions on shops where I might have some luck in finding a coat like this in New York? Thanks in advance.

Just got myself an Ann Taylor wool coat today. ^_^ I'm tired of finding the perfect coat, and this is actually a pretty nice coat. I needed something to wear with my skirts + tall boots, and this is actually a very nice length. Medium length, but a bit smaller because I went with the Petite version of the size (just to get a bit of length off). It's a pretty navy blue, and actually of very nice quality.

baklanyc do you think the Lad Musician nylon coat this season will be warm enough for the winter in nyc?

You know, funny you should say that, but I was just thinking the same thing. I don't think they look warm enough. I don't know how cold it gets in Japan, but the 'esther cloth' coats Lad Musician is pushing don't look like they'd be warm enough for NYC. I figured if you want the parka look, go to the originals and just get something by Spiewak...

I'm thinking about buying a capelet/trapeze jacket since it doesn't get real cold here it could be just the thing! I saw this cute red onefrom Gap.com (thought I would post the others as well). I like the red one the best (it also comes in brown) it kind of reminds me of the little shrug sienna miller wore (sort of).

i will have to wait a little while on this one...
i blew my fun money on an ipod and all its accessories this weekend...

from the look of it they look rather thin but i really like the slim fit of the jacket thus wanted to get it but the price quoted by juno was out of my budget for a coat that cannot warm enough for nyc winter. if just the retail price i am ok with it as a 45-55 degree jacket.

Are you talking about Lad? What did Juno quote you?

Go to Costume National boutique on Wooster street in SoHo. Also, Raf has a pretty cool version hanging in Barneys (although it looked very heavy) - which is VERY long, but you are VERY tall ;)
