What Do You Consider As Petite?

I'm 5'5.5...im so NOT considered petite..but then again do you mean over 20yrs? because I'm 14 and i'm considered above average, but not tall

how do you determine dress size? i know it varies from country to country but what are the measurements which determine whether you are a size 2 or 4 or anything?

i think petite just refers to people who are shorted than the 5'4" average height (in the us). my mum is 5'3" and she shops in the petities section. she wears a size 10, and they make up to a size 14 in the us for petites.

I have very small narrow sholders, kind of short legs, im 5"2 and weigh 102" i generally have a smallish body frame (just put on weight since september ) I have skinny arms. I am told these are sterotypical petit trates by friends.
I ahve to buy petite clothing it fits better on the sholders not just the length etc. its generally smaller.

I'm firmly 5'6 1/2, and even though I have really, really upright posture, most people still call me petite...to the point that people are always surprised to hear my actual height. maybe I exude some sort of a 'short person' personality... the weird thing is that when I'm standing next to other girls I always feel like I'm towering over them, yet when I'm next to guys I feel reeeally short.

how about this - Rhea Perlman from Cheers was 5 feet 4 inches - a normal size for most women, really. she just seemed like a little shrimp b/c all of her costars were so big!

I'm about 5'4 and 120 pounds (was a lot thinner in my 20s, sigh) and I don't buy petites b/c my legs are a little longer than they should be. my jeans inseam is 32 inches - without heels. I guess that's normal.

I think it's more of a shape thing than the actual person's height...
But if we only consider numbers, then I'd say about 5'3 and under.

It's proabably works better for people to shop by body type.

I',m 5'1 and I shop in Petites, but this lady that works with me is 5'6 and she is about 140 pounds, however her shoulders and upper body is just as small as mine. She has a body type where her upper body is much smaller than her lower body. So she could shop in Petites for her top and sweaters and shop in Misses for her skirts and pants.

People bodies are just shaped in so many different combinations, I mean you could a pear shape or apple shape or whatever and really have to shop in two or three different categories of women clothing to be able to find something that fits you properly, or you just have to shop with different designers or apparel makers who stuff fits you the best. It all guess work, because "sizing" for women is all screwed up.

5'4" and under is considered petite and size 4 and under.. ..i'm not sure if it has changed.

I think petites are cut differently too. I can't wear a petite size 4 in a lot of placesbecause the waist doesn't come close to reaching my natural waist and a 6 is too baggy in the butt and thigh area.


I'm about 5'5 about 117 and wear a 4 in places like gap, express, limited. My legs are short however, and often pants are cut so wrong for my body type i have to go a size up...and it ends up looking awkward. My biggest problem is my waist to hip ratio. I have a very high waist, at the narrowest point about 26" but my hips are a tee tiny 32". It's so hard tha I try to wear size 5 hip huggers from the juniors departmens and they fit fine, but slide right off after an hour of so of wear, because I have nothing to hold them up.


I think I look bigger than I am because of my awkward body shape.
