What Makes a Supermodel?

The supermodels of the time are representative of the time that we live in.

The early 80s were the rise of the modeling world. Everyone knew who girls like Kim Alexis, Carol Alt, Paulina Porizkova, and Elle Macpherson were.

The late 80 to about 93 the world was obsessed with fashion. That is the reason that the girls of the supermodel era got as big as they did.

The mid 90s was all about cool, alternative, and grunge so the girls that came out of that are Kate, Amber, Shalom, Karen, and Carolyn.

1999-2003 was big time pop culture. All the top girls were stunning but more relatable. The models that rose out of that are Gisele, Karolina, Maggie Rizer, Liya, Carmen, and Angela.

2004-2013 fashion became super exclusive. Fashion had gotten so high brow that supermodels weren't for the average joe. Daria, Natalia, and Gemma are all bonafide supermodels in that during those days they were recognizable by face but not name. Gemma was actually pretty well known by name. For a good 6 years Daria's face was all around the world.

Now the world is currently obsessed with celebrity which is why no matter how trash Kendall, Gigi, and Cara are at actual modeling people will still call them supermodels. It doesn't matter that Karlie is good at modeling, she's still seen as Taylor Swift's best friend. That is why you can't compare the current girls to the supermodel era girls because they are not known for their fashion work or even being models. Kendall is known for reality tv and Gigi is known for dating famous boys and being a music video girl.
