What Makes a Supermodel?

Thats nice.

The public is misinformed. VS markets all their girls as "supermodels"

Yes they are. BTW, what VS is doing is just business(which includes hype/selling) which equals an edge, money & attention. Something I've seen for years and are learning more about in my studies.

Neither are you or these girls, thank you. They're already being left out of the books/documentaries/things that when last and this includes Tyra,Heidi, etc. Boy if it wasn't for TV she would almost never be mentioned(which is very small if she is anyway).

I hate to say it Mr. Flip, but even the people on Urban Dictionary agree with us, and most of them are not fashion experts

Contrary to popular belief, a supermodel is not just any prominent model. There are only five: Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Claudia Schiffer. These are the models who ruled the fashion industry in the 1990s with outrageous contract demands and failed though financially rewarding attempts at acting and singing; the era of the supermodel is over. Prominent models are known as "powermodels" and include Tyra Banks, Kate Moss, Gemma Ward, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and the like.

Yeah it would similar, but it would be distinctive. I'm still holding out hope!

I have a feeling Supermodels a la Linda, Christy, Cindy, etc will return as well

agree, agree, agree -_-

Tyra, and the likes are Supermodels. Even Tyra says so. Even Janice Dickinson said Tyra was the last of the great supermodels.

Its like talking to a wall...

Janice only said that because they were friends.

Lilflip, I think you are one of the ones introduced to modelling via ANTM, am I right?

Lil_Flip246 said:
Nope. I knew about modeling before. ANTM just made more interested in it.
Oh really?

From the couture models thread:
I was exposed LIKE THOUSANDS OF OTHERS to the world of fashion by ANTM.

Caught in a lie?

I can call some no-name like Justin Timberlake the best male artist of all time, but that doesn't mean anything, other than the fact that he may be somewhat popular at the time I said it. Titles like that are subjective.

What is not subjective are facts. Compare Justin's stats to someone like, say, Michael Jackson -- who far exceeds him in record sales, chart positions, awards, fans, etc -- and what my opinion is really doesn't hold much weight compared to that, does it?

So, like I said, compare Tyra, Adriana and Heidi's high-fashion campaigns, covers and editorials to Linda, Naomi, Cindy, etc and see how they fare. :innocent:

As a fan of Top Model, haven't you learned never to take what Janice says at face value?

She also quoted a statement she made to Tyra in an interview, saying, "You weren't in Vogue that much." The supers "were" Vogue, as Linda put it.

We all know Tyra is her own hypeman(good one Sepia) so why in the heck won't she call herself one, even if most dont! You like her suffer from delusions of grandeur. BTW I haven't seen that statement about Tyra from Jan, either way Tyra hired Janice what was she suppose to say?! Besides it doesn't matter the writing is on the wall, and it says Cindy,Naomi,Linda,Christy,Claudia,Kate and a few other very lucky & special woman and Tyra-Heidi,Daniela, and the rest of the VS/SI girls are not among them. In the days of Cindy,Naomi, etc you had to be a Topmodel 1st(along with respect and great work) to become a SUPERMODEL, years later and to this day the title has gone way down and blown out of proportion where as you are some misinformed people called the VS/SI girls Supers.

Speaking of titles, many feel Tyra has no right(I heard that several times here) to have such a show since many don't think she is a great model/with illustrious work (teaching girls about modeling:innocent:). Janice just got straight frustrated. I guess that's why no one cares about the winners. It's all for show(or Tyra oops). It's crazy to take it serious.

I'm embarrassed to say that I, too, watched Top Model because it piqued my interest in the industry. Thank goodness I grew away from that after the first season or two, after learning "the basics". Now the show is just a guilty pleasure. I only really started watching the industry a year ago!

Omi, did you ever see the episode of P Diddy's MTV show, where Naomi came as a guest and helped the contenders pose for a shoot. I thought she'd be a great model search host.

I hope someone does a show based on the supers.

You know what I watched the first few seasons, mainly b/c of Janice and that was the only thing me & my roommates at college could agree & laugh on. However, I know the difference between entertainment/hype and what's real. Unfortunately I find like a few of my roommates people don't know much about Tyra as a model or fashion things. They just say well 'She's hosting a show right?!' Big deal I say, Paula Abdul is judging singers. So I take the show with a grain of salt, but I find I have lost interest in the last few seasons.

BTW the Supers have gotten enough attention, money & recognition to seriously spend time doing something like these shows. Sure they have more to offer and know more unlike someone like Tyra. However, they have nothing to prove, are over the business/attention, and a few are still actively working like Naomi and don't have time or interest.

Yeah I know Naomi is busy, but I thought it was cool watching her give advice. I wish someone did a special series on them or something where they showed old footage and did interviews though. Some of them, maybe not Naomi and others, but some (Veronica, Janice, Beverly, Stephanie, et al) don't seem to be working as much and might agree to do it. Plus, photographers, designers, etc could talk.

Quick, someone call E! or Oxygen or something! :flower:

By the way, HA! @ the Paula Abdul comment!

But it's kinda like what's in it for them, they have the respect, money, got enough attention and many have families(Stephanie,Cindy,Claudia,Beverly,Christy, etc). They're not like Tyra who doesn't have the family, career or the respect. So she has to hype herself. I'd rather be praised for my work/remembered/mentioned(Cindy,Naomi,Christy,Linda) than have to do it myself, mainly hyping(Tyra). It's like she is saying 'Look at me, look at me' and 'I matter too, right'?!
