I don't know if there's already a thread like this, I searched but couldn't see anything like it. I thought it might be a cool one start. So often stores to copies of the runway looks, and most of the time I can't afford anything that graces a runway! Anyway, I thought it might be cool to post things when we find them, especially if someone's after something in particular.

I've been coming across this dress a lot this season, it's been in a lot of press lately.

It's a dress from New Look here in the UK, it retails for £65, and it's pretty much an exact copy of this look from Lanvin's Autumn/Winter 07/08 collection. The sequins on the New Look dress are a different colour, however when the dress was featured in UK Bazaar the write up on it said the sequins can be brushed the other way to reveal a silver back to them...making the dress actually sort of colour change - and making it much more like the actual Lanvin dress.

I wonder if they thought by taking something from a few seasons ago and doing it now that no-one would notice such a clear copy.

Asda copied the Balmain dress that Kate Moss wore. See here to read the full article.

mentioned and posted this in the H&M thread....that H&M sea and sunset photo print t'shirt is a direct rip-off of the prints of branquinho s/s 09.

I saw that top quite a bit - it's a shame they opted to use their version of the print on a top I always felt..

Today at the vitrine of the Marella boutique i saw 100% copy past from Dior`s F/W 08!!!And also they`re trying to immitate the Famous CD Chair!!!I was sooooooooo angry when i saw those shoes and the chair on the vitrine killed me...!!!Aggrr...
The 98 % immitation was on those shoes:

It's really sad that stores knock off designers the way they do.

forever 21 and others have been sued over this issue. At least H&M hires a designer to do something for them.
so sad.

Best,
Mauro

sooo many people do it. it's like taking the trend to the masses without the branding. I do not accept the practice and do appreciate when boutiques try to guard against manufacturers but at the end of the day, i'm sure i have something in my closet that looks like an original.

I don't mind stores borrowing ideas and inspiration from designers (so long as it's not a signature element such as red soles) but when it looks like they're a carbon copy I think it's a bit cheeky, especially when the wearer tries passing them off as the original.

Here's an interview with marc jacobs, he comments on copies and clothes that are inspired by his line. If you look at anything in zara for example you can definitely guess where the inspiration comes from, I saw a skirt yesterday which was definitely inspired by Balmain but I don't mind that! High street stores are bound to follow trends and it's safe to say that if they didn't, a large majority of people wouldn't be as inclined to shop there, we all want to emulate the latest 'looks'- everyone's loving thigh high boots at the moment for example. If it's a straight up knock off (cough cough steve madden) I'm put off because it just looks cheap. If you can't have the real thing (ehh which I certainly can't) I'd rather have something inspired by what I want.

Steve Madden is one of the biggest shoe copiers I've seen! Sometimes I fail to see any difference in them at all! Do they not legally have to have five alterations for them to be clear legal action being taken against them?

I bought an Alice McCall inspired skirt from the thrift store, like the one Mischa Barton's wearing:

I'm sure the cheapo version does'nt compare to the real thing in quality!

This blazer stopped me in my tracks outside French Connection because it reminded me so much of Yves Saint Laurent F/W 07-08

Yes I thought the same when I saw it styled in the ad! Zara did a pretty exact copy of it also when it was first about also.
