Who are your least favorite designers?

No, but you missed my point. They were designing for years before they made a cent, you call it the need to be noticed, I call that passion. I also call that a flaw in your theory that designers design for love of money first and foremost.

To be honest, I'm a little lost as to how this conversation even got to this point. It all started with you preaching that people dislike certain designers out of jealousy or some ridiculousness like that....

I suppose you just have a very different idea of what fashion is than I do.

If it is such a passion and art like for Galliano and McQueen. then why is it so expensive and only wealthy people have access to it?

Shouldn't their collections revolve around the idea that there only inspirational pieces not pieces that eventually will be sold?

I don't know you clear me up on this one. so it seems that only you have the "right" answer?

"They are so damn 'intellectual' and rotten that I can't stand them anymore....I [would] rather sit on the floor in the market of Toluca and sell tortillas, than have anything to do with those 'artistic' b*tches of Paris" -FRIDA KAHLO :flower:

Guys look, designers are making a LIVING, it's natural of course to make money.. But I see your point of OVERpricing stuff

there are the designers, and then there's the business. mcqueen and galliano are owned by larger companies that have agendas and want to make money. the designers have to cater to that, if they want the backing.

We all look at fashion from different perspectives; depending on our backgrounds and interests. I am a art history student so things like oscar and most of the other NY and LA crew bore me because they don't challenge they just cater to their boring clients; of course Mcqueen and Galliano are expensive; have you seen the clothes? Can you find that type of design in JCPenny's? No! I repeat No? And the same could go with Oscar and Carolina; but with so many great quality basics out there; I as a fashion follower need more than just a pretty dress to mull over for months until the next season. Fashion is a great meeting of comerce and art, and each designer must find their own meeting place. Be it a collection of simple clothes done in luxe material or hard to wear symbols of excess. I am a man and so when I see I dress the last thing I think of is how someone is going to wear it.

Overpricing the designers' clothes is a really important part of fashion. Wether everyone likes it or not, half the appeal of designer clothing comes from the outrageous pricing. If Dior, Chanel and Versace were priced at prices we could all afford then they would lose their appeal and celebrities would stop wearing them. We always want something we can't have. Do you seriously think that Louis Vuitton is priced highly because of its "design" or "quality" or "art"? No way! Its all priced like crazy just to create this picture of absolute fashion perfection to everyday ordinary people.
It might not be fair or right but it works. People are THAT materialistic these days.

^ I beg to differ. Being involved in fashion design I can assure you that the price isn't expensive simply to make the clothes seem exclusive. It has everything to do with quality of the goods, labor costs, difficulty to produce, handwork involved etc.

The reason high end fashion is expensive is because the houses don't have strict budgets to work under when producing the garments for retail.

Of course there's a huge markup, but it's not just to keep the item exclusive.

^ I will bet u a million dollars NO designer handbag is actually worth the price it is given. No designer handbag is "difficult" or "costly" enough to be priced at such ridiculous prices.
I understand there are difficulties producing these merchandise but theres no way they're ACTUALLY worth that much.

Now you're talking handbags, I don't know accessories, only that Hermes and LV are made almost entirely by hand, which would explain there prices.

did i just hear prada being accused of lacking in originality and innovation??
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Not only that, but also an unberable ugliness and pretentiousness :p

Spike: you wouldn't know how LV bags are made, because honestly, it would show you how much they are overpriced

As for Hermès, it's kind of overpriced too. It's carefully made, by hand, etc, but I° some things are still made abroad (the scarves in Madagascar, the silver jewels in Africa) so the "made in france" label doesn't explain it all, II° Some things can't cost that much. The best way to understand it is to see the prices of taylors (in Paris we have a bunch of traditional uberhyped taylors, where the taylor himself take your measures, do everything by hand, let his wife iron the shirts (!), and let you choose the cloth). Well a Sea Island cotton made to measure shirt (not "demi-mesure", he let you choose everything, from the cuffs to the collar) cost 300 EUR. A Hermès shirt can cost way more than that. And I don't know how a simple ready to wear piece can cost more than a bespoke and entirely made by hand piece.

anyway.. going back to the topic... i don't like celebrity designers... Nicky Hilton to be specific.. (don't really think she should be called a designer anyway)

I doubt any designer item is actually worth its price. But like I said, the whole exclusiveness of designer items is what makes it so successful.
Chanel is a PERFECT example. Chanel fashion is so basic, so simple and so easy to make. And im not saying it's ugly. But I dont think a simple skirt or denim jeans should cost $700. My mother can sew things like that for under $70.

Versace, Cavalli, D Squared, Armani, Dior, Bottega Veneta, Ungaro and last but defenitely not least: Dolce and Gabbana. Blugh.

I just want designers to stop being boring; screw the pricing I'm talking about creativity and the ability to go beyond a pretty dress and delve into the realm of pure emotional beauty and inteligent conversation through aesthetics. I Just don't want to be bored when I see a NY collection and I am. My God at least Milan is sexy but Ny is just sorta stale.
