Why do YOU love fashion...?...

what is it to you...
what does it do for you...
what does it give you...

why do you love it SO much...?...?...?...

:P

I love fashion because it is like an extension of my personality and what kind of mood I'm in. It can tell people to back off and leave me the hell alone, or it can invite people in and show the softer side of me. Fashion gives a certain amount of freedom to people and allows them to be who they want to be.

Plus most of the time it just makes people look so damn pretty

A lot of people will say it's because it's a way to really express yourself. It's a way to subtly signal where you fit in, what is in your mind.

For me, though, it's mostly an experience of art.

EDIT: peachy, did actually not see your post before I posted that

for me,as others, purely as a medium for self-expression. a way to use clothes in the form of creativity...a certain poetry.

there are large aspects that i am quite ambivalent about of course and sometimes i even dislike the term fashion because of the connotations but as a form of literally being able to put your soul and emotions onto a sleeve, that makes me very enthusiastic about it.

I've been waiting for a topic like this! I honestly don't know why I love fashion. I've just had so much passion and respect for it from a young age. I remember being around 7 and watching Tim Blanks talk about Dior Fall 2002 Couture on FashionFile. I had no idea what he was talking about, but I was mezmerized at what I saw. It was like my small world was blown up. I don't know if I I'll pursue a career in fashion. Maybe one day my passion will die down and I'll come back into reality. It's an incredibly large industry, so many want to be apart of it, and a select few make it. My love for fashion is still as strong as back then, even if the fashion world has become more business, then art. As Karl Lagerfeld said, "Fashion is an injustice, just because you want to work in the industry, doesn't mean it's going to happen".

Its hard question...because for me its a part of my life and happiness. It makes me smile, inspires me, gives me a hope for better life, opens my eyes, makes live my dream...
Fashion is the chance to be like everybody and the one at the same time.

I can't remember where this is from and how it went, but it pretty much summed up why I love fashion:
Fashion is one of the art forms that you live your life in. Not everyone likes poetry, not everyone likes looking at paintings, but fashion is one of the art forms which everyone in the world takes part of. It represents our inner psyche, it restablishes our status in society. It serves as language, a non-verbal communication, which is the only way in which a culture's beliefs, mores, customs etc are passed on to another generations. Our choice of clothes represent inner desires and emotions which we want to show or hide too. Fashion is everywhere, and everyone is part of it, but it is as diverse as every being's dna.

God, what a difficult answer to put into words.

I suppose for me the thing that I love most about fashion is what it ultimately seeks to do; make life more beautiful than it is by making people look and/or feel more beautiful than they otherwise might. There's something so idealistic about fashion in that it visualizes things in the best possible light. But there's also that part of fashion that seeks to challenge beauty, to change the collective eye and propose new ideas of what beauty can be. And unlike any other art form, the beauty that is often created in fashion is completely fleeting, it's a moment. At it's best it burns brightly and quickly and can never be duplicated. That ability to change, to constantly renew itself is probably what makes fashion so intoxicating. I love that you can look at one designer's work within a given period of time and see the change, whether it's blatant and revolutionary or subtle and evolutionary. You can't always appreciate that journey from one thing to the next in other art forms; it's usually only in hindsight that you can see it.

As for what fashion is, besides being an extension of personality, or a mood, or a way of expressing inner creativity, it's also a kind of mask. I love the transformative quality, the effect that an item of clothing can have on the way people see you and the way you might see yourself. There's something about the right pair of pants or a fabulous pair of shoes that can bring out a confidence in you that you didn't realize you had. Despite how much fashion deals with the surface, it's the effect it has on the way you feel as opposed to the way you look that makes it so amazing...to me at least.

There's more to it, I'm sure, but I don't think I've ever stopped to think about why I love fashion. Knowing that I do always seemed like enough. ^_^

I have to agree with many of you. Fahion makes me happy. Fashion and high fashion are two different things for me. Almost everyone likes fashion and fashion is involved in everyone's life.
I love how high fashion has affected my way of thinking and living. It's a world that appreciates different kind of beauty and cultures, its more accepting and open-minded, it can make almost eveything beautiful. It made me more accepting of things and people in general and not get drowned by things that don't matter. High fashion is often discribed as something superficial but it made me less superficial and I like that.
Overall I love how fashion as an art can inspire me and change my mood.

I've never been able to reply to these kind of questions .... Why do you love fashion ? Why do you love art ? Why do you love xxxxxxx ?
I've heard (read ?) if I cannot express why I love fashion, means I don't love it that much ...
I just think I have a certain sensitivity for fashion ... And probably because I like the world in image and in artistic forms more than I love the life in "reality" ...

And that's probably why I do prefer flipping through a magazine (where a narrative's built to showcase outfits) than watching a fashion show, or check out the craftmanship in a shop (though I can appreciate a good tailored outfit, for very sure) ... And why I do prefer people owning the outfits, create their looks, than watching them on a catwalk. When I look at a show, I immediately think about how to wear it, with what, in what circumstances, for who it would look perfect ... and so on.

I love narrative, I think ..... Probably why abstraction does nothing on me. I just don't have that sensitivity ... Even conceptual art does much more on me than a Rothko canvas ...
Oh yeah, we were talking about fashion .... and why I like it ..... I think I said it, actually.

mmm wow, it's kinda hard to answer this easy question and i have a feeling that i'm not gonna like my own answer lol

why i love fashion?
i like to wear fashion, maybe because somehow deep inside i'm vain. i like to look good, i like to be different, i want to be "seen"
what does it do for me?
it gives me confidence, it creates me an image i want people to see from me.
i want my look to reflect my personality

I think I love fashion because I love change.
Fashion never stays the same, this is the reason why I admire modern-thinking and unusual designers who seem to be stepping forward into new things. This is also the reason why I hate done designs and recycled ideas.
I always get excited to see the new ideas at fashion week - I am mostly disappointed with people, but some continue to surprise and innovate.

I like the business psychology of fashion - how brands become empires and sell a fantasy of themselves, how companies and magazines try to stimulate or reflect desires, the archetypes that get used, and so on.

OMG! Great question, softie!!!! :woot:

Lets go over each of the questions, one by one

Why do YOU love fashion...?...

I guess Ill have to go back when i first became interested .. and as someone noted, its thanks to CBC and Fashion File ... I watched the show and saw all this INCREDIBLE things happening .. it struck a chord and I started to get more info and get more and more interested in fashion

what is it to you...

Nowadays, its all about the street .. when I first started to try to get more and more info on fashion I was a bit weirded out about the fact that trends were determined by couture shows .. then I learned about how trend forecasters work nowadays and that idea of fashion coming from this huge melting pot of people sounded very democratic and alluring ... everyone's a part of it like it or not and some wear the fashion dictatorship baton just by wearing the right outfit and being spotted at the right time ..

Fashion IS self expression ... I love it mostly cuz I love to people-spot and try to "read" people thru what they're wearing ... and if you pay attention to detail in a couple of blocks you can see AMAZING things ..

what does it do for you...

It gives a sick pleasure .. lol .. to me its all about being a voyeur FIRST .. then is me wearing it, and then there's a different story because I use tricks either to get the right kind of attention I want or just to signal people ... its fun ... its an automatic attitude adjuster! I love that about fashion!

what does it give you...

Pleasure, a job and meaning .. mostly and the most important part is inspiration .. I see something and I have already a story in my head about it ...

why do you love it SO much...?..

Hahahah ... I guess what makes a difference between me and the regular fashion fan is the fact that I cant get enough and theres always more ... fashion isnt finite ... and fashion maybe for the today but its ALWAYS looking for the tomorrow ... Im kinda a neophile and fashion gives me so much of the whats gonna be the new black (I HATE that colour, btw, lol) :ninja:

good question :P

I have some fragments of answer in mind... For exemple I remember how I could spend time just browsing through pages of my mother's catalogues the likes of La Redoute/3 Suisses and imagine as many stories as possible... not even a story with a plot or anything... just a feeling that tells a story... you can imagine their lives, what they like to do in the morning, how they spend a summer evening, how they would cheer themselves up, what is their way of life... People are inspiring in that way, you can virtually borrow their lives and visit them, just for the pleasure of experience... Clothes unveil fragments of life and may add some taste to the story...

it´s like to define what is number to Math.a hard question but ,why not, essential too.
Fashion are doing (it always did) too much for me than the opposite. i love magazines, the art behind the lens, the conceptual behind the clothes ,make ups, ideas, the balance of all these expressionisms in our societies.
Fashion is generic, a father/mother/educator to each person's own (as existencial m.).you don´t know what born first ,if your art or if the art that you consume and live from the others.in the end the result is a melting pot of life breathing by eyes,ears,hands...

Well this is an example of a very lucid question but it's very difficult to answer. I am enthralled by this industry and all the hardwork behind it. At first I wasn't appreciative of it, but as more months came I learned how to. I just started to love fashion 10 months ago and it feels like I've been loving it forever. I think I got to fashion because of television. At first I was watching some Hollywood talkshow and I remember being fascinated by the clothes they wear on the red carpet. And from that my knowledge evolved. I started watching FashionTV, reading fashion blogs, collecting magazines, and registering to forums like the Fashion Spot. In the future, I hope to be in this industry.

oh....
so many good answers...
i need to take some time to read and absorb them all...

and i want to hear from as MANY people as possible...
it's really amazing and fascinating to read everyone's responses...

personally-
i have a love/hate relationship with fashion- with a capital F...
it's like a drug to me...
and i am totally addicted...
even though it makes me crazy sometimes...
:ninja:...
