WSJ. Magazine Mens Style Fall 2023 : Linda Evangelista by Steven Meisel

Both covers are solid and deserve printed covers. They both have a stylish energy, a timeless radiance and elegant simplicity. All elements Vogue is lacking these days

The production of Linda’s shoot is lovely with the intimate, playful mood, and classic Monroe-esque styling that compliments her current physique, and her looking her age even with the heavy retouching-- unlike the Rafael mess.

I thought it was an archive photo, maybe from 2001-3 period, but I'm surprised this is brand new. Wish it made it into print, but well, as I fashion lover I understand how cringe feels in comparison with the main subject, with all respect.

Linda’s cover is fabulous and is a testament to the relationship her and Meisel have. At this point of her career, she’ll never look more sublime than when shot by Meisel.

‘She looks comfortable and is able to play with the elements of her body she is the most comfortable with: her face and her legs.

‘It’s really great.

‘I love Alcaraz!
His win at Wimbledon and his performance at Roland Garros gave me chills.
Now that he is becoming famous, that the fashion industry has snatched him, he will be polished…He is the talk of the year in Sports!

I think those two covers shows perfectly why Supplements are now more relevant than ever. The standards are high and there’s a cultural relevancy. Look around, from WSJ to D La Reppublica, they gave us great fashion photography, interesting subjects, high standards…Without the ugly photoshopping we saw at Numero, the fake Edginess of Vogue France or Vogue Italia.

I’m not sure the Vogue UK/US shoot is something Linda would be proud of but this, yes!

And for those who wonders why a Meisel would shoot for WSJ instead of Vogue US…
Even if I’m not in the secrets of the gods, I think that a photographer of his caliber has past dealing with the politics that are involved when dealing with Wintour.

And tbh, his photography for me doesn’t really suit Vogue US newfound « indie » aesthetic.

After Meisel last issue for British Vogue (in some part of the next 6 British Vogue issues), we know where we will find his print work from now. WSJ owner must be a friend of Steven or someone from the team. It's so rare to see him working outside Conde Nast, but of course he did it back in the days.

Instantly classic. I'm sort of lost for words, because this is exactly what I wanted from her British Vogue appearance. Mature, intimate and flawlessly executed reunion between modern fashion's greatest pairing of model/photographer. It evokes Liza in '90. Madonna in bed. Marily and Stern. What a moment! And what a pleasant surprise, too.

Now, where do people buy WSJ. Magazine? lmao

Divine! Absolutely divine, and I finally feel like Linda has been served justice during her comeback. The cover, as well as the accompanying photographs are... heavenly. The whole concept works, adore the sense of maturity, the sense of beauty, the effortlessness this shoot oozes and the beauty styling from Guido and Pat McGrath. Masters at work!

This feels LEAGUES above what American and British Vogue were able to give us, and the outcome of this only cements the fact Pavarotti was 100% the wrong choice.

The sooner one lets go that Vogue is no longer about a grown woman’s elegance, grace and refinement of the highest of standards, then it’s so much easier to find those characteristics and aesthetics elsewhere. Looking at the current September issue of Italian Vogue, it’s Dazed/i-D (..with the worst of Glenda’s Bazaar that is the Rafael shoot jammed in there)— there’s no more traces of Vogue, let alone Vogue Italia.

Meisel is likely at a stage of his career/life where he’s only fully-committed into the work if he truly feels a connection between the team and people he’s shooting with/for. It’s why his Zara efforts are still solid, while his recent Vogue and campaign shoots are just him going through his least of motions. This is lovely of course-- and classic Meisel, but hardly anything exciting from him; how many time has he shot this sort of in-bed-with-Madonna concept???

If talents like Annemarieke van Drimmelen/Norman Jean Roy/Koto Bolofo were given the opportunity to shoot Linda, their skilled and experienced eye (and retouching contributions) would likely produce superior imagery. Linda is still a capable chameleon-- it’s just the creatives supporting her that needs to be of better talents. Looking at this shoot, the styling is the best in revealing her best assets— face/legs, while modestly and thoughtfully covering her torso. And the retouching is restrained enough that it doesn’t mishapen her current fuller face into the one from 20 years ago. The softer studio lighting also blends well with the retouching of her face. It’s heavily retouched— but it’s all so thoughtfully groomed towards bringing out the best of her. That’s something that a whole new generation of creatives seem to have forgotten, or never got.

Absolutely gorgeous. Owning the camera and the space with her pinky finger.

the shot in alcatraz is giving serial offender

Too bad there aren't too many shots. The editorial left me wanting to see more!

I hope Linda is doing it better now. As all the people here didn't knew about the breast cancer.

Vogue should take.this masterclass on how to capture a supermodel. Stunning cover and Ed not sure why the other disastrous cover ended up becoming the main cover.

perfect, get rid of the theo wenner cover -- actually meisel would have shot that boy incredibly, sean bohary esque

I believe this is the first time Kate Phelan work with Meisel?

His portraits of Marta Ortega Perez appeared in the magazine not too long ago, his collaboration with WSJ. is no news but it is indeed a rarity. I do wonder if he's interested in continuing editorial work and what magazine he would choose to do it in now that Vogue is out. WSJ. could be an interesting fit. Or perhaps we'll simply get little rays of sunshine like this, on occassion....

Yeah, he also did a profile for Sofia Coppola, stunning editorials both.
