I was sick of mine, and didn't want to cut it or change the color, so I braided it in home-made microbraids. It takes a long time and will make your arms ache, but it looks so cool when it is done. Right now, I have my hair in 77 braids.
It will look fine if you keep the parts regular, so there are no major bare patches and so that all of the braids lay in the right direction. However, if you aren't confident that you could do a tidy job of it, there are lots of places out there that do braiding, and many will work on Caucasian hair as well as African-American. I would suggest going to a professional braider if you want some extra hair woven in, which I think really looks the best, because then the braids can be thicker without sacrificing the quantity of braids. Many braids looks better than a few braids, as you don't see much scalp that way. I have very thick hair, so I can get away with just my own hair, and I have done my hair like this quite a few times in the past, and have gotten pretty good at it, from practice.
