I'm making a clutch out of cordiroy material and I don't know what I need to use to make it "stiff".

what would you guys suggest?

Perhaps you could use cardboard or a synthetic plastic to make the structure of the clutch before covering it with corduroy?

Cardboard will get smushed, bent, and generally destroyed. Your bag wouldn't last long, I think. I like the idea of a structure, though. I agree that perhaps some sort of synthetic material might be good support.

In stores, feel any courderouy bags that you see to feel what you like about the structure (if you don't like it, don't mimic it). Then go to your local hardware/junk-type store and look around. Remember that it doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it feels right and will function well. Maybe you could bring a peice of the cloth to tset how it feels. Stores like that have all sorts of random stuff that might be useful. That's what I'd do, anyway.

Good luck, and tell us what you use. :flower:

Actually... Cardboard is a very rough version of what actual designer bags are stiffened with so yes... a thin weighted cardboard would be best.

To give the bag even more weight.. use a lightweight cardboard as well as a felt or foam.

If you need anymore help.. feel free to PM me... I make bags in class all the time...

I don't like the idea of cardboard only because what if it rains for example wouldn't the bag get soggy...

Anyways, I'll keep you guys posted (i'll probably be ready next week 'cause i have other things to do for now)

thanks

You can use that plastic stuff that looks like a grid. You probably know this stuff from "crafty" projects with yarn. It works, but I don't like the texture.

The best thing I've found is actually used for shaping lampshades. It's fusible and adds just the right amount of structure. Also available at most fabric stores is "stablizer" it would be with the interfacings. It's typically not fusible but works great. I use either of these with a layer of felt as said above.

Luna has quite the experience with bags, I'd definitely PM her with more ?s if you need to.

A lot of the materials you use to stiffen a handbag are often not easily sewn on a home machine. Do you have access to an industrial machine?

And when you think about it, if you're making a bag out of leather, leather is usually treated so that it is mostly water resistant... therefore water would never even reach that cardboard. Eventually, yes, the cardboard will wear in and the bag will get softer with use. But I'm not pulling your leg when I tell you that papers and cardboards are used for handbag construction. They are called "stay papers"... Bontex, chip board... etc etc.

But now that I think about it... You wouldn't want the clutch to be too stiff...

Perhaps you can pick up some of that foam they sell at craft stores.. Most of the times they cut shapes out of it.. but I know they sell it in fun colors.... Just put in two layers of that.. it won't be affected by rain since your bag is out of corduroy and not leather.

So yea.. :)

hello there,
actually, what you want to do if your making it outta courderoy, is go to a fabric store and ask for either craft fuse or wonder under. a lot of pro companys use this iron on stiffener to make fabric bags more sturdy....and its water proof. for the bottom, alot of the time you can use a thin plastic template material that is manufactured for craft and quilt templates, but works great for bags!

i work at a fabric store, make my own bags and was actually one of the girls on that teen vogue/dooney and bourke 2004 design team...i dont really care for the charm bags though...anyways. hope that helps and feel free to contact me!

Ooooh, I like the Marc Jacobs quilted bag in the picture above. Beautiful! And the Dior croc doctor bags are fab!

But I am partial to the Fendi spy bags (just ordered the dark brown python) and I think the spy bags will be huuuuuge this year. Love the combination leather versions - my best friend is getting one in dark brown suede and lambskin. I'd love to get one in fur.
