Zoe Saldana

This absolutely ridiculous.
Nina Simone played by Zoe Saldana .... this says a lot about Hollywood and that's just sad.I love Zoe but this is wrong at every single level.

I need to see more set pics to pass judgment. I didn't know the project was getting greenlit this quickly?

They can't be serious with that wig. I don't think she knows what she's getting herself into with this role, poor girl.

I agree. I will never understand how it is that Kerry Washington and/or Adepero Oduye got passed over and were probably never even considered for this.

This. It's not even a project that is backed by Nina Simone's estate, nor is it being developed by a really great set of directors/producers. The really sad thing is that Simone's look was what made her so special - the fact that she wasn't light skinned and that she embraced her beauty as it was.

This movie will either surprise us and be great or go down as a travesty. I do adore Zoe for her style but I've never seen her in a dramatic performance that has blown me away. Hopefully she will surprise us...

Who is her stylist?
I remember reading about her being Nina a few months ago, and seeing Nina's daughter saying she respected Zoe as an actress but that she as completely wrong to play her, when there are other actresses out there who are darker and look better to play the role, and are also great actresses. I just don't understand why she was picked? What about her makes someone think of Nina Simone? It's just because she's a popular actress.

.
Exactly. Zoe was cast as her because to Hollywood, she's black enough and "safe" for white audiences. Ridiculous.

I never really saw Zoe as "light skinned", but I do agree she
doesn't fit the description of Nina AT ALL.

Viola would have been perfect. Zoe can act though, so hopefully
she does the role justice.

I'll save the judgement cos I didn't get behind will as ali or jamie foxx as ray and look how those turned out.
I'll wait to bash until I see it.

Yeah, I admit I was kind of like that, too in those two cases. ^^^ But mainly because both Will and Jamie were comedians and had a persona that seemed to me incompatible with the roles they were playing. In this case, I'm dubious because it seems a typical Hollywood move. Whenever they can, they avoid casting actresses--specifically black actresses--who look too ethnic. Nina Simone was dark-skinned, beautiful full lips, and sported an afro. Zoe is brown skinned, thin lips, thin nose and very European looking. That's my beef with this. I don't doubt Zoe's talent so much as I doubt her presence and detest the obvious racially-motivated implications behind her casting.

Actress Zoe Saldana on the set of 'Nina' in Los Angeles, CA on October 25th, 2012. The movie tells the story of the late jazz musician and classical pianist Nina Simone including her rise to fame and relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson.

 I cannot get behind this. It says a lot of someone to sign onto a film that the family and estate doesn't even support. And we all know she'll more or less get award show buzz for the role, too. Ugh. Go back to gracing us with your LA street style, Zoe.
