I'm with ForChicSake. There are hundreds, literally hundreds, of other black actresses who could've pulled this role off, and THAT's the problem. That rather than search for an actress who could inhabit this role both physically and artistically, they chose an actress that doesn't look anything like her, thereby reinforcing the subtle racism that Nina herself so publicly balked against. You can't tell me that Zoe was the only person who could believably pull off this part. No, they chose her because she's marketable. And a substantial portion of why she is marketable has to do with her looks. She's fair and she has European features. That's not a bad thing. That's a fact. Just like it's a fact that Nina Simone was dark-skinned and her features more African. It's a "problem" because a lot of Simone's persona centered around her refusal to bend to the shallow standards of an industry that celebrated women who fit within a very narrow definition of beauty, a definition which more often than not excluded black women in their natural state. See how ironic that is?
What's more, the fact that there are so few black actresses able to get actually decent parts, is only more salt on the wound. Zoe's talented, but she's far from the only talented black actress out there. My pick personally would've been the Adepero Oduye. Not only does she physically resemble Simone, she's also ridiculously talented.
I also have to agree that her dress at the after-party sucks bricks. I prefer her look at the ceremony. Her hair was quite lovely, too. All in all, it was an incredibly underwhelming night fashion wise (as I kind of guessed it would be for some reason). Only Zoe, Kerry Washington, JLaw, Jessica Chastain and FLOTUS wowed. Everybody else either flopped horribly or bored me.
