1970s-1990s The Japanese Avant-garde

some of the pics in this thread are unreasonably large and take FORever to load, making the viewing of this thread extremely difficult...

would be great if a mod could adjust these images...

here is a vintage matsuda blazer of spun rayon, black with very pale cream polka dots. the inside is pale cream with black polka dots. i don't recall seeing much if any matsuda in pure white...i only remember seeing a wonderful very pale cream color.

the shirt is matsuda a/w 93 (with faux marker writing along the edges of the ruffles). the inside of the french cuff says "kiss of venus"

does anybody know what happened to the matsuda brand? i read the parent company, nicole, is still popular in japan but online info about matsuda is incomplete. there is some malaysian brand called matsuda, but i think it is entirely unrelated...

thanks for the great images!...
love the matsuda stuff...
a lot of rayon during that time, if i remember correctly...
it was a fabric innovation at the time and lots of japanese brands and fashion forward companies started using it...

looked and felt like silk but was more durable and cheaper...
could not ever touch water though or the fabric would warp completely out of shape...
i tried it anyway and lost a couple of pieces that way...
...

i've wondered about matsuda as well...
i always loved their eyewear and ads...
i feel like there is a thread where we talked about this already somewhere...
not sure where though...

always great to see older Issey stuff...
I never saw much of it in person at the time, so I really love seeing it...
the plantation stuff is beyond..

thanks again!

they were not able to sell the stuff by the name of nicole overseas, hence matsuda.

in 2002, they had gone through the hardship smilar to what YY inc went through.
now, the company/management is completely different except the name, the original organization dissolved in 2009 ( the founder mitsuhiro matsuda died in 200:cool:.

very interesting...
thx runner...

sad to hear matsuda is no longer with us...

you're welcome softgrey
