I'm sorry if a topic like this already exists, but I didn't find.

If you like to watch pictures from the past, of models/supermodels, you have probably noticed that in the 90's there were a "specific" makeup style. That's what i call "90's makeup" ;)
It was quite flattering and sexy. And sometimes also too much, tacky.

I dunno i really enjoy that makeup (in a slighter way of course ;) )

You can post here pictures of models with that kind of makeup (and also actresses, singers if you want (but young enough!))

Close up photos are really welcome!

Thanks!

One essential 1990's make up item to me is brown lipstick

Kevyn Aucoin wrote about 1990's make up in his book 'The Art of Makeup' :

The 90's seem to be about individuality. (showing 7 different faces of model Beri Smither to illustrate this point) ..The many choices women gave open to them today. With a few changes- a bleached eyebrow, a metallic lip, a heavily lind lid, or brightly rouged cheek - Beri's look was altered drastically, and seven extremely different effects were achieved

So.. I'm not certain if I agree with there being a specific 90's makeup.. however.. the beauty models that were used in makeup campaigns in the 90ies overall.. strike me as having a more conventional beauty than a lot of the models used today..

Well, i love the colour that we call in France "bois de rose" its a colour between pink and brown.
And there was a lot of colour like this back then.

Unfortunately, untill today, i have never found a lipstick of that colour. :(There's always something i dislike (too brown or too pink ).

ps: thanks to participate hanne!:flower:

There weren't only one style, but i think the pictures are going to show what kind of style i'm talking about.;) When i think supermodel i "see" this kind of makeup.
(it's too difficult for me to explain my feelings in english on this topic. sorry.)

Glad to :flower:

I think I actually had a lipstick by that name!! It was by Dior..
edit - found an image of it..

And you're right.. it had a slight tint on pink/rose.. but to me it was the brown that dominated..
MAc has a large range of lipsticks in brown with a pink/rise tint - on the light side there is : Half 'n Half .. and a bit darker : Cosmo

I think you are referring to a more earthy color palette no?
Browns, taupes, different shades of earthtones.. not necessarily a minimalistic natural look.. because heavy lipstick and eyeliner is often involved..but a makeup that focuses on shading and accentuating features..plays with light and shadow..

..and stays away from bold colors..

not only lipstick but brown everything

for me, when I think of 90s makeup there is always brown undertones in every colour

lipliner also comes to mind when thinking of 90s makeup

this is what comes to mind:

I love Browns, taupes!

Early and mid 90's make up was about projecting strength and was so feminine. I love it. If I had to pick that one signature thing that said '90's' it would definitely be the brown/earth toned lipstick. There was a softness despite being dark. As someone said above, it was about shading and highlighting features.

But it started getting a little colder as the millennium approached. More purples, and metallic colors. When I look back on that part I can't help but think that it was a subtle expression of a dystopian, cyberpunk type world that was foreshadowed in Gibson and Phillip K. Dick books, the Matrix, etc. It was our own particular kind of fin de siècle anxiety.

Thanks for starting this thread! I have a special fondness for the 90's.

For me, 90's make-up is less is more! Very nude lips with little bit of eye liner and mascara^_^ I love the look:heart:

Ok, I think i have to explain a bit my point of view about this topic.
Some of you talk about the shades, even if i agree about that brown colour...this is not the only thing i was thinking when i decided to make the thread.
This thread is based on pictures of supermodels.
I was thinking about a way to put the makeup especially: [ Strong/done eyebrows + what we call "the banana" (eyeshadow on upper eyelid, quite clear color of eyeshadow in middle of the eyelid) + eyeliner + lip pencil ]

When i look at pictures back then i often see this kind of makeup:

There was also other kind of makeup of course, but i mean, for me "this" makeup, this way of putting the make-up is really the makeup which represent the 90's. (And there was a period supermodels were having thin eyebrows also.)
Perhaps i'm wrong but i think this kind of look, that way to put makeup is really "90's".

So i guess i must enlarge a bit this topic to "The makeup that represent most the 90's for you".
That's better. ;)

Post pictures to illustrate !!!!! :flower:

So, for me ;) .... when i think 90's , this is the makeup which come mainly to my mind. What i remember well.

I will post more pics later.

I think we're getting what you're saying..
I mentioned contouring
makeup that focuses on shading and accentuating features..plays with light and shadow
..and so did Gincat :flower:

Dark color in the crease of the eye to emphasis the depth..and light color on the browbone and middle of eyelid as contrast both in color but also in a play of depth..
