All About Retail: Sales Associates, Management, etc.

how important do you think it is to wear designer labels to a job interview at a high end department store? i have an interview for Harrods on wednesday, and most of my 'work' wear is just gap, topshop etc. any other recommendations for making a good impression?

not necessarily labels, but a inkling that you get the store (or designers) asthetic is impotant. I know at RL, it was important to have the right "look" for the store, but they are very into creating a mood there.

I swear...Im going to start a blog about working in retail.

I have just seen, learned, and dealt with so many interesting things (not always good) that would make a great story/soap opera.

Fashion Retail

I applied for an retail position for H&M and I did not hear from them yet and I am considering writting a follow up letter, but I dont know how to write a good one that will win me an interview. I have a strong interest in the fashion industry and will attend a fashion college for fashion design/ mercandise in the fall.
But How can I WIN AN INTERVIEW FOR THIS STORE FROM ALL THE OTHER CANIDATES THAT ARE APPLYING FOR THIS POSITION?
PLEASE HELP -ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED

I'm sick of my day job working 9-5 and sitting ALL day. I've worked retail before but I'm contemplating an assistant manager job at Guess? What do you think guys? I've never been in a managerial position before but I have a lot of experience as an SA. Is the grass greener on the other side. Should I go for a luxe job instead?

Very interesting thread!

Many moons ago I worked in retail.. I really loved it.. the clothes, the co-workers, the customers ..

My husband would ask me "do you get paid in clothes?"..LOL! I always spent more than I made no matter what store I worked at.

Olga :)

thats what I'm worried about. I'm worried I'll spend all my money on the clothes

It's EXTREMELY tempting.. you're there, you see cutsomers buying up stuff, you justify it with your discount.. and on and on.

Whether I was in sales or mannequin dressing.. same thing.. and even with the mannequins, I'd dress and doll her all up and think "WOW.. she looks d^^^ good! I think I'll get this outfit for myself!" LOL!

takes a LOT of willpower to work in retail.. especially if the store is nice and you love the clothes.

Olga :)

Well I recently wrote about my experience with an interview with Forever21 in my blog.
http://chicinspector.blogspot.com/2007/02/life-in-fashion-struggle-pt2_23.html

Right now I am still filling out applications at a mall near where I lived but it seems with majority of these stores is that you need retail experience. Here are the stores I applied to:
Mandee
Lane Bryant
Hollister
Aeropostale
American Eagle Outfitters
Guess
New York & Co
Victoria Secret
PacSun

If I hear nothing from them which seems the case I guess I will have to go to New York and apply to stores there because I am not having much luck in my own state, New Jersey.

sanita13. I worked at VS. It's not good because you are always on call and you have this constant pressure from your superiors to sell credit. I would never work there again. You have to be careful not to work for a store who is struggling for employees or you will get caught up being worked to DEATH, filling in for other people's shifts. VS pays okay. I got paid $7.25 working as a regular associate. At Rampage I made $10.00 as an SA. I'm working as paralegal right now and I wanted to work at A & F as an assistant manager, but I can't live off of it. They also work their employees and management to the BONE. My best friend was an assistant manager there and almost went insane. She only made $12.00 at her position.

I'm going to apply to Chanel (SA) and Guess? (Assistant Manager)

I would like to know too! Or if anyone has worked in high end. What is the discount? Salary range? Thanks

I would also know love to know this! and how people apply for luxury retail jobs as they are never advertised anywhere or require loads of previous luxury experience.

Thanks! :flower:

 American retail must be crazy. I make the equivalent of $11.60 (£6) working as junior bar staff.

My salary now sucks, I totally got screwed, because I was promised so much in my interview and I went for it. And it was all lies.

If it wasn't for the fact that Im moving, I would have went somewhere else. Im going to transfer with my company, and look for something else as soon as I move.

At least this way, I already have a job when I get back up north.

Well I had a group interview with Victoria Secret and it was total drag and totally tooooooo long, I want to scream so bad to get the hell out of there but I stuck with it. The next day I had a group interview with Hollister and the store manager only asked us i believe two questions about ourselves and then he talk about the company expectations blah blah and then that was it probably under 20 minutes. However the VS interview was like almost two hours long.

Yes they tend to put you through that. My old forever21 interview was very long. It was two by two

i don't want to be the lonely SA staring into space.

That's me!! My job is soooo boring. I often just stand there staring it to space.

I mean you can only clean stuff so many times.
