i have been considering applying for a retail job. im 18, just got done w/ my first year of college (so i have 3 months or so to work part time), and i have no retail experience. my studies are not related at all either. im a chemistry/pre-dental major, and math minor (well im trying haha). however, i love fashion! but after reading all 22 pages, it seems like retail is very hard. obviously, i wont be able to work at any high-end places. i was considering anthropologie, true religion (about to open), express, american apparel, jcrew, banana republic, armani exchange, maybe lucky or urban outfitters. ive gotten job offers at a&f, but i dont want to work there nor have it on my resume.

i dont know if it will be worth all the work though (dealing with angry people, on your feet the whole time, putting make up). i dont need the money because its just a few extra bucks. i really would like to work somewhere fashion-related though. ive had an office job before for 2 summers and i loved it. there was alot of work, but i always finished it fast and sat on the computer and hone all day. the pay wasnt bad either, $8/hr considering that i was only 15 and 16.

any words of wisdom? or suggestions of where to apply?

well.. I just got a job at a vintage designer consignment boutique..I love it because its low stress and I think you learn more working an an independent shop..I would try to work somewhere like that as oppposed to a chain store..I make 10/hr which is pretty good for retail..being on my feet does take its toll after the third hour..i usually bring a change of shoes since im in semi heels all day long..

yeah i would definetely rather work at a local shop or boutique, but i never see them hiring. guess i should go to a bunch and ask. i would imagine it would be harder to get jobs there though, since they probably would want retail experience

i worked at urban outfitters for about 6 months and they dont have their own cleaners. we had to clean everymorning and on sundays we had to do hardcore cleaning. i used to have to mop the damn store!

i got fired from there because i called out one time ( on my birthday!).

urban is just bad news.

Which Urban did you work at?
I work at Urban right now and...

1. We have cleaners every other morning, and SA's never clean

2. My managers walkin in tipsy to get their paycheck and we all party together after work.

P.S. on a side note, we are one of the top selling Urbans, so that could have something to do with it.

I have been offered a job in All Saints womenswear at Selfridges. The base salary is £1000 per month plus incentives and you get 5 free clothing items to start your wardrobe (with no price limit!!!) and then a £400 gift card to spend on whatever you want each season.

Does that sound good to people as I really have no idea.

I'm still considering whether to take the job...

How Good?

How good of a company is Reiss considered? I was offered a position with Reiss for their Los Angeles store, and I'm not sure if the name overweights the lack of pay(what I want). Should I settle with the hourly wage their offering me or should I stick to my requirement(which I know lower end companies can afford, which makes me wonder Reiss is cheating me or not with what they're offering me.)

I'd like to work in a small independent boutique- got an application and asked the manager questions briefly. My friend was there (she is older and has worked for Chanel in the past).. She told me that the manager seemed interested in me working there and I seemed like I would fit in.
I took the application home though..and I still haven't handed it in, because it's been like a month and I have had a lot of other stuff going on that got in the way.
I am wondering if I have any chance working at that kind of a place? I have absolutely no experience in clothing retail (lol, the only retail job I did was at Linens 'N Things when I was sixteen!)
I am an undergrad student now majoring in public relations/journalism, and have only had 2 other part time jobs- both office jobs and totally unrelated to fashion.

Is it worth giving these kinds of places a shot, or do I not really have any chance? People have told me I would fit in perfectly at that kind of job.. but like I said, I have no experience (just my own personal interest in fashion and desire to learn)

I say give it a shot, and apply. You never know. Sometimes just having a passion for fashion is enough. They can train you on the other stuff.

Id never heard of them, until I moved up here. And I still have not gone in, but I wasn't impressed with what I saw through the window really.

I am just wondering who works at the Marc jacobs or marc by marc jacobs stores? How is it working there? Is it hard to get a job there? Why doesnt the Marc by Marc store on Melrose in Los Angeles allow internships? I wish they did because I need an internship for my senior year.
