Always Dress to flatter your color/shape?

The only fashion tips I've already learned is how to flatter my skintone (olive, can look yellow if I'm wearing the wrong color), and shape (pear shape).

This (+ fashion-laziness) means I usually always wear the same style of butt-flattering Manager jeans, and the same (sort of drab, warm/dark) traditionally "fall" colors (all year).

It's not that I have anything against vibrant or pastel colors - quite the contrary! And I wouldn't mind wearing the skinny pant, if I didn't think it would make me look like the new superhero, mighty ThunderThighs...

Anyway, just wondering if you guys tend to consistently take your color/shape into account when you're outfitting yourself, or if you tend to experiment with things that may be in season or that you otherwise like (for example, I love turquoise but it is unflattering on me), even though they wouldn't be what would be advised for your color or shape?

Or, do you pay attention to your coloring and shape at all when you're considering a new piece of clothing?

Always! No one piece is going to look good on everybody - no matter how cute it is. There are styles that I love but don't wear because I know they won't flatter me. There is nothing sadder than a girl wearing something she obviously can't pull off. Some things are obvious; for example, if you don't have great legs, don't wear a mini skirt. Period. Other times, it's more intuitive and may take some experimentation (colors, cuts, etc). I actually think that being able to dress in a way that flatters your body is the crux of good fashion/taste. Sounds to me like you've got a good handle on it though :flower:

i wear lots of black so i usually now i'm on the safe side! i found when i just wore whatever no matter if it was three sizes too big w/ holes in it, but i liked the patterns and colors i was always getting compliments i could pull it off. now i wear more 'sober' clothing i never get that anymore! ultimately if you think you can pull it off, you can.

i still haven't found out what flatters me and what not (stress on the first point)
i try to avoid things that obviously look horrible on me. but than again there is not much that does not, so i am quite free to choose whatever i like, haha. how sad. ;)

(if you love turquoise although it doesn't flatter your skin tone there are ways you can wear it nonetheless. just make sure it's not near your face. you could wear turquoise hand gloves for example. no? )

Wow Yasmin We must be twins. I'm olive and pear shaped too. I always wear "fall" colors too. I just stick with it because it looks good on me. I'll mix up the accessories though or try a different shade of my best colors. By now I can tell by the cut of a garment if it's going to look good on me or not. Sometimes I experiment but I usually go back to my tried and true.

Eh.. It's not like I buy/wear clothes to intentionally look like crap, so I guess that I buy and dress to flatter myself.

Yes, I do keep both those points in mind when buying clothes, but (lately esp) I try not to allow it to keep me in a rut. I know what works on my body and can actually spot it at 20 paces now ;) Did this quite literally the other day--saw something in a store window I knew would work on me 20 minutes before the mall was closing, walked in, found my size, tried it on, bought it.

Anyway, even though I have some parameters, I'm still able to keep expanding my wardrobe in terms of shape and color. Part of it is being patient about spending time trying things on to find what really is flattering. Then you get to a point of more knowledge where things start to go faster ...

I would encourage you to experiment though :flower:

Btw, one thing I've noticed myself doing ... for whatever reason, I don't really like to wear greens. I couldn't even tell you why, maybe it just feels too cool, I want something warmer ... but almost every room of my house has some green. So there's more than one way to enjoy a color :flower:

Something my mother always used to tell me,
"Just because it looks good on her (model, girl in ad/on tv) does not mean that it will look good on you."

Some people just aren't built to wear every single style or trend. Girls with guts should not wear super low rise jeans. (You get the picture I'm sure.)

Generally I do pay attention to what will suit me personally rather than wear something that is in style.

I advise experimenting a bit, though - if only in changing rooms lol - because you never know when something that is said to be inadvisable for your general shape/ skintone, will really work for you personally :flower:

i have to adivise purple on black or mixed raced girls looks amaizing (tip given to me by my sisters who love purple on them)

i really pay attention to my personal tastes, with no regard to if it will suit the hue of my skin but of course i always pick the size that suits me.

I always do. Its pointless to wear clothes if they dont flatter you. Yes, it looks good on a mannequin but it washes you out...The clothes look nice but you look a little sick...

Usually but not always. Last winter I was gifted a lovely cashmere sweater, crewneck with cables neither of which are very flattering for my figure. But I love the sweater and the person who gave it to me, so I wear it anyway. When shopping for myself I always try to think of my coloring and shape.
