All things and people Apple has an undeniable air of smug superiority that surrounds it, in both a good way and not. (This coming from an religious Apple user.) It starts with the inclusivity. If you have an iPod, you must have iTunes, and therefore you're more likely to buy from the iTunes Music Store. And like others have mentioned, a lot of programs on PCs you can't run on Macs. Same way vice versa. However, since this past year, you can run Microsoft on Macs. So, somethings Apple have branched out of its little world.
People usually want to buy Macs because it's cool. And let's face it, macs look better. But, unlike most people I actually buy it because it's more useful to me. I've been a mac user since middle school where I had a Mac Addict teacher who got me hooked. So I've been using iMovie and iPhoto for about 6 years now, and I simply find it easier to work with. And all those programs that came with my computer, I use almost all of them. I can't say the same for my old Dell.
Plus, Mac's interface has become 10X more practical and easy, IMO at least. I can't live without my F12 key, dock, spotlight, F10 key, F9 key, or my tab/star key. Just by pressing F12, I get my dictionary, soduku, calculator, translator, and calculator, along with some Mad Lib game I never play. When it comes to writing essays (speaking of writing essays...) instead of waiting for dictionary.com to load or flip through a bunch of pages, I just press F12 and there you go... Extremely useful. Even Microsoft's upcoming Vista will incorporate Mac's interface into their own.
BUT, it goes without saying that the macs' word processors are BS. Appleworks sucks. I had to buy the $300 (I think it was) Microsoft Office. But, it was worth it. You can't even move the margins on the sides of the page with Appleworks. Apple doesn't even bother coming out with a new processor because Office is the definitive. NO company can live without Microsoft Powerpoint... and I can't either. I read a couple pages back aobout NeoOffice, and I haven't heard of it before, so I can't say if it's equal to Office. But, if you're a new Mac user, go buy Microsoft Office. It's worth it. You can probably get it for free when you buy your Mac if you're a student, it's that or an iPod. (But, we all know what choice anyone will make when it comes between the two.)
"HEY! did you see that?"

"yeah, there was just lovemyboots going on and on and on and on..."
"she should shut up, huh?"
