Applying foundation - fingers, sponge or brush

I just bought a foundation brush from estee lauder because i heard it gives a really nice finish.. but instead its streaking badly and its giving me little lines everywhere! does anybody know why??

Make sure your face is really well moisturised before applying make-up ... really allow the cream to sink in ... and then try using a damp brush so it doesn't go all streaky. ^_^

I like a sponge. I have used fingers before but it looked not as good as when applied with the sponge. I used a brush once but it made me streaky.

i have been using a brush- not a foundation brush but it will do hehe
and it looks great :) not streaky at all...

I allways use fingers. :)

Like someone said, the warmth helps the blending and it doesn´t waste any product. Plus, it´s more hygenic from the point whenever you use sponges or brushes you must wash the often, otherwise they will just be spreading bacteria on your face.
Also, you use much less product, so you have a more transparent finish. ;)

And the best way to use less foundation is an healthy skin to begin with.

I always used to use fingers, I thought this gave the best finish. Best for blending and warming up the product. I don't like sponges, too streaky. Recently a makeup artist used a foundation brush on me, and it was amazing! absolutely flawless!
She put some foundation on her hand and put the tiniest amount on the brush..literally, it was almost dry. She used tiny strokes all over my face, applying more on the areas that needed it, but always using the tiniest amount of foundation. Truly flawless...layers is the key if you use a brush.

I've been taught to apply foundation with a brush and then roll over it with a triangle sponge. Looks near perfect.

On myself, I use my fingers.

I use my fingers when i apply foundation. Funny, it feels like i have more control when i use fingers instead of a sponge.

usually I use fingers for daily coverups and a sponge when I need a full face. I've never used a brush, but I'm going to have to try it!

i have a YSL Perfect Touch foundation. It has a brush on one end, and its really comfortable. I used to squeese out some foundation on my hand and then spread it with a brush. By the way, this foundation makes miracles, it really covers everything need to be covered.

^That foundation is brilliant. The best I've ever tried.

I don't even own a foundation, I make do with concealer. I can't be bothered buying a foundation, I'll only use it on spots anyway. I feel like I'm wearing a mask whenever I'm wearing foundation all over.

^^^ Not heard of that sounds interesting:woot:

Okay, I finally managed to find a pic of the sponge I mentioned earlier...it's called a Beauty Blender.

I rarely wear liquid foundation anymore though, because I'm in love with my Bare Escentuals Mineral foundation. I have a trick though, before applying the BM I apply a skin illuminating foundation which goes on fairly light but creates that nice glowy look. Here's what I'm talking about:

Get a bit of the Revlon Skinlights fluid on the back of your hand. Alternately, use MAC Strobe cream.

Dab it all over your face using a finger, lightly, focusing especially on the cheekbone area.

Blend with a damp makeup sponge.

Dab your kabuki brush in the mineral makeup foundation, and swirl it around in the lid of the container so that the powder is very evenly distributed on your brush.

Buff the foundation all over your face. Don't forget the sides of your nose, beside the eyes, nose bridge and down your neck so that there are no harsh lines.

Dot concealer where needed and pat in lightly using a finger or a concealer brush.

Buff in circular motions to blend everything together.

Try Bare Minerals if you haven't already, it's so much better for your skin + the look is amazing to. & also, I've heard that you shouldn't use your fingers to apply foundation because of the oil transfer from your hands to your face. If you do wear liquid though, I'd recommend a foundation brush. It's less cakey looking & goes on much smoother.

Wow wow wow wow!! Thanks, missbliss, for the pictorial instructions. You make me want to go out and grab BE Minerals! Your last picture shows you so perfectly done. But that's probably because you have great skin to begin with.

For my foundation I use a sponge :D works fast
I only use a brush for eyeshadows, blushes and (bronzing) powders

I didn't know where to ask, i wanna know which brushes you're using. I wanna buy news ones and i dunno which. I saw Dior ones from Backstage collection, but i dunno if they're good, is anyone using them?

Thx in advance;)

Well, I bought a foundation brush from sephora a few weeks ago and went back to using a sponge yesterday. Why why why do I always buy more foundation brushes when I ALWAYS go back to a sponge? ><

i use my fingers for concealer, its easy to blend but im thinking of trying foundation with a brush. it look soo good when i see the male models getting their makeup done with foundation brushes!

OMG! Why oh why am i not a makeup artist already....Anyway! so, brushes ARE the best, take it from me, whom has gone from fingers to sponge to the beauty blender mentioned above. I use to get cystic acne even from sponge that i only used twice, so, i decided it was much to expensive. Brushes however, are a bit of a steep initial investment, but if used with care, will be the loves of your lives. First some care instructions:

1.After using your makeup brush, a) wash it with a mild cleanser or shampoo, and let dry.
b) wait untill you take a shower that night, and shampoo it in there with you, and let air dry over night.

Either way, it'll be nice and soft and redy for you the next morning.

To apply with the brush, here's the fun part, that you can get SOOO many finishes with a brush.

Want dewey and sheer?- Wet the brush, apply foundation, and "paint" your face, using long strokes.

Want fuller coverage to hide some more?- Do what i do and "stipple" your foundation on the face using patting motions. Thats the way i have done it for about a year, and i love it....you can use less on areas that don't need coverage, and more on those that do.

Anymore questions lovelys?

Ps- I use the foundation brush from sephora daily, and i also have the mac one, and the chanel one.

I still always end up going back to my favorite application method: smearing the foundation all over so it is a thick, unblended layer on my face and then stippling over it with a damp sponge to blend it in. I like brushes, but I can't work with my foundation (colorstay) very well with one before it starts to dry and streak. My nose always looked so streaky no matter how I used to brush!

I use to use my fingers but the mess left under my nails annoyed me. I use the sponge from now on. I haven't tried the brush yet :p
