Attention whores...love em or hate em...?

people who seek attention just for the sake of it...
to massage their ego...
to make themselves feel important..loved...cool...whatever...

it often doesn't even matter if it's positive attention or negative attention...
just as long as they are the center of it...


how do you feel about getting attention?
do you care if the attention is positive or negative?
do you seek approval for what you are wearing...?
or do you simply want to get people to look at you and notice you...?

do you believe in the old hollywood adage that goes
'there is no such thing a bad publicity'...?

or does getting attention for the wrong reason do more harm than good...?

how do you feel about others who do this as well...?

I am quite willing to oggle at the attention whores, givers and takers, and all that, but seriously, they are either heroic or most likely, tragic! No hate there, as I can't really hate a spectacle, eg. train wreck.

For me it's a combination of hate and pity. It just seems like the bigger attention wh*re a person is the less they actually have to offer that's worthy of attention. That's a generalization of course, I mean someone like Karl Lagerfeld could easily be considered an attention wh*re if you're judging based on appearance and behavior, but I just imagine that if there's something about you worth noticing - what you're wearing, what you're doing in your life - you wouldn't need to make any kind of effort to be noticed.

It's like the difference between Carine Roitfeld and Anna Dello Russo. Before Carine became a cult figure for every streetstyle blogger to breathlessly fawn over, she was noticeable because she had that x-factor; style. Anna seems to just wear whatever is the freshest or the most flamboyant off the runway look, with the loudest possible accessories, and the "fiercest" shoes available, but to me she looks like the epitome of a fashion victim begging to be noticed.

Yeah, Karl Lagerfeld might be an attention wh*re by what he says...but then we are pretty much all attention whores Though, he really knows how to pitch it and make people pay attention. What rather amazes me is how he keeps getting better.

Anyway, the comparison between Carine and Anna is great indeed....Carine - I have never seen her wear anything that did not flatter her figure....Anna on the other hand. Gosh. I mean, she has a fine figure, and yet half of what she puts on looks horrendous. The first part is seeing if something CAN look great on anyone, the second part is to make an assessment of who this piece of clothing might fit, the third is to assess another person's body and make the right choice for that body. You would think a fashion persona of her magnitude would know these things and be the best at it.

I don't know what the issue is....I mean, does she not have that skill or is it just that most people who see her images are just fawning over it anyway, because the clothes are from the best fashion houses?

that is my biggest reason for starting this thread...
i really do NOT get some of the stuff that is going on...

i just do NOT get how some people can look at someone like Anna dello Russo and think that she looks good...
do that many people in the world have really bad taste???...

cause, i really don't get it...

and there are a few bloggers that i could name as well...
who just throw on a bunch of stuff that is weird...

i'd like people to pay attention because i look super cool or attractive..
even when i wear more avant garde pieces...
i try very hard to put them together in a way that is flattering on me...
I would really rather NOT get attention for dressing like a hot mess or a sad clown...

^ I was thinking of some bloggers too. There are times when I see these fashionistas, or whatever you want to call them, and I just don't get what people see in them. Even though it's not easy to judge why a person is dressing so over the top (is it for attention, or is it an innate strangeness?) more often than not it's impossible not to assume that they're dressing only to be noticed. There are times when the street style photos taken during fashion week seem like a competition; whoever can out-fierce everybody else gets their 15 minutes (until the next day when someone out-does them). Sometimes it makes me feel like I'm older than I actually am, but I look at these kids (who are, for the most part, around the same age as me) and all I can see is a child playing dress up and showing off for the grown ups.

Honestly I'm just relieved to know that I'm not the only one to look at some of these "style icons" and question 'where's the style'?

I remember way back when I was reading his blog and was kinda interesting ... now its all about videos from shows and but this from Luisa Via Roma and look which famous person I bumped into .. in a way I think its not about him anymore (admit it, he is funny).

But yeah, internet can def. make instant celebrities and so reality tv ... but Im not into celebrity culture .. and definitively not into drama .. Id rather read a Popular Mechanics than a US Weekly ... :s

oh yeah, absolutely. they're just doing it for attention and don't care whether it's good or bad. as long as people are looking/talking, they're satisfied. i see it SO often walking around in brooklyn. people wearing ridiculous outfits (the less matching, the better), crazy hair, carrying lunchboxes as purses, claiming to be stylists because they help their friends decide what to wear to a party... they'll basically do/wear anything to get noticed.
it's maddening.

and of course, this isn't to say that we can't all have our own sense of style...i can certainly appreciate the styles of those who may not be like my own, but if you're getting more *sideways stares* than compliments...well...

i'm with you--i'd definitely rather have no one look at me at all than get laughed at because of what i'm wearing. [i almost choked on my pizza when i read "sad clown" lol]

agreed completely. anna dello russo has openly admitted that now she dresses for the photographers and bloggers, doing various clothes changes a day. she obviously loves the attention, otherwise she wouldn't go out of their way to please them.

i read an interview with tommy ton (jak & jil), in the new Industrie mag i think, where he said that last fashion week carine actually wore the same coat to every show, making it impossible for the street photogs to get any fresh shots of her. she's obviously not in it to be papped or get attention, in fact, it looks like the opposite!

do you care if the attention is positive or negative? Once again, I don't live by others opnions of me, but only by my own.

do you seek approval for what you are wearing...? I can honeslty say I don't fit mold, I am daring, flamboyant and creative in what I wear and how I wear it. A sole leader not follower. There is nothing greater than leaving your home every morning and feeling like yourself and no one else.

or do you simply want to get people to look at you and notice you...? Confidence is what makes another person curious of you. You might be wearing something unusual, but if you are not confident in it, you'll be able to see right threw you.

sadly, i think that the regular kind is the attention grabbers lately..

Attention whores ruin it for everyone else. It is hard to explain to some people that wearing what you want and doing whatever you feel like with yourself is not the same as attention seeking. This is why i hate the look at me people. Specially, because they usually look down at you since you are not looking back.

To me, attention is a downside of wearing what i like. I could live without the stares and yells (meaning: I need to live without it). Maybe, i'm in the wrong place to wear what you desire (people are soo much on the trend or looking hot that when you are not a part of it they try to trash you). Sometimes it even gets to the point where it's annoying to have to put up with the yells, and i always end up thinking, "maybe they yell because they think i'm looking for attention".

It feels nice when someone comes to me in a respectful way and say that they like something i'm wearing (most of them are old ladys you've gotta love them). But when it comes to bad remarks as in "she's wearing a costume" or "what did you throw on" i get hurt. Not because i am sad that someone didn't like it, or else i wouldn't be wearing it, but because this means that they have the right to express themselves and therefore, cut my right to do so.

People who know me suggested many times I should start a style blog, and in the beggining i thought it might be a good idea, but i'm reluctant to do it lately for all the wannabes out there who think that if you upload a picture of yourself Galliano is going to want to have te with you. I'm wondering if it's possible to have a blog and not get labeled as an attention wh*re.

Yeah ... it get's very tiring if you are around an attention wh*re for very long. At first they are fun and interesting ... I find them entertaining. Then it becomes tedious and repititious and I just loose interest in them altogether.

Also, it's very hard to stay a friend of an attention wh*re. A good friend makes sure that you are granted some special attention too ..... it has to work both ways or the freindship is never that worthwhile.

I don't like to judge why people dress their way. Some might dress in order to get attention, others dress in order NOT to get attention. Some clothes will give you attention in certain environments but not in others. I don't care much about how other people dress and why they do it. Of course I have my opinions but I keep them for myself unless they are positive and I rarely start to make theories about people's reasons to dress the way they do.
As for myself, I certainly sometimes dress to get attention. I am a musician and perform as a soloist, so in these situation I should have attention. But of course the clothes doesn't do it alone! Probably some people think that some of my more crazy outfits are hiddeous, but others really like it - not only because of the clothes, but also because they like to see that someone dares to differ.
