First time browsing on this thread and I love it. Such fresh style.

there's a few great little pockets that are nice to walk around and shop....

the city....queen victoria building and the strand arcade....just lovely buildings and a nice atmosphere....castlereagh st....

oxford st, paddington and darlinghurst....you'll find some australian designers here.....Collette Dinnigan, Morrissey, Lisa Ho, Akira Isogawa etc....the markets are nice on the weekend too...

double bay and queen st woollahra....i live in this area and love it....you just have to walk around double bay....tree lined streets and lots of little cafes....it's very european....Zambesi is here, as well as lots of other little boutiques.....queen st woollahra also has some great shops with more tree lined streets and gorgeous little homes dotted along the way.....stop at zigolini's for lunch or a coffee.....the man who owns it is an absolute doll....across the road is bills, another famous restaurant....great for scrambled eggs....transvaal avenue in double bay is gorgeous....my hairdresser is there....the belinda shop is there too (stocks a lot of overseas labels that are hard to find in australia....marni, dries, miu miu, lanvin, vanessa bruno, anne valerie hash etc)

king st and enmore rd newtown....lots of very quirky shops....very retro....cool place....again, just walk around and enjoy whatever catches your eye.....newtown has a great vibe and some great places to eat too....

surry hills....crown st and bourke st are full of amazing cafes and restaurants with little shops sprinkled along the way.....i am moving to this area on friday and can't wait....it's a really vibrant part of the city.....i can't stress how good the food is in this area.....Kawa on crown st is great, so is Fifi Foveaux's.....the bourke st bakery is supposed to be amazing....

victoria st darlinghurst....again, great for cafes with outdoor seating....a good place to sit and people watch....tropicana is a hotspot.....lotus pod is a cute little shop with cheap things....if you're into vegetarian food, govindas on darlinghurst rd is amazing....you can have a great vegetarian dinner (buffet style, really low key) and then watch a movie lying on cushions....great fun.....

what else am i missing....

Check out Vogue AU forums, they'll be happy to help you out on the spots to check out in Sydney for anything. :)

 Only one page!

Just goes to show how exciting it is to shop in Sydney...

I'm from perth and unique and interesting fashion is very hard to come by. But you have to remember that Australia is a season behind Europe and America. I also have a theory that because Australia is so laid back and relaxed, we're not really predispostioned to be fashionistas. It's all part of the culture I feel.

And if you wear anything adventurous people stare..where i come from anyway (Brisbane)

Im not, really.

But compared to other cities the shopping is much more excting.

WOW i'm really surprized at the girl from perth and brisbane saying we're behind? ah well i'm from brissie and now living in NY. and australia is not behind. we have some of the most exciting new designers in the world coming from australia. i really hate when kids that haven't got around to see australia slag us off like this. there is a really original culture here. some people overseas say its possible we are ahead.
now i don't know where abouts you go in brisbane? but there are very fashionable people there. original too.
sorry rant over

sorry one more thing. i think some people don't realize how big the aus fashion scene is overseas. they all want them. all these people are in aus, some aussies obviously don't know where to go.

They're called Ksubi here too. I think they got sued for the name or something.

I think that there are many extreamly fashionable people in Australia. I don't think we're behind at all.

i do agree that some people are a bit too hard on aussie fashion....
although my complaint would be that we become so swayed by trends here....
perhaps it happens in big cities all over the world....but i've noticed it here, particularly in syd and melb....
skinny jeans are in and suddenly EVERY girl (and almost every guy lol) is wearing them.....smock dresses, leggings and ballet flats are in and the next thing you know EVERY girl is wearing them too.....the trends seem to just grow and grow until every last girl in every last suburb of the major city has caught on....it doesnt seem to leave much room for originality (or people aren't taking initiative rather)....

and then a few months later it's something new.....
i dont know if the problem lies with the consumers or with the buyers....but once a trend comes in, it is ALL you can find in the stores....the stuff is everywhere until the cheap knockoffs appear and it is completely saturated and you are so sick of it that by the time the next trend comes along, everyone is so happy to have something new to follow and they all jump on that bandwagon.....it's a never ending cycle....

buying a pair of jeans that werent skinny was almost impossible during that phase.....now buying a dress that isnt a smock dress or doesnt have a retro print all over it, or pockets and buttons, seems almost impossible.....or buying boots that aren't either tall and flat or trendy little ankle booties.....

it drives me crazy....almost every shop i pass has the exact same stock....it becomes a uniform....

Agreed^ Especially about the overdoing of trends.
It's like somebody twigged on that nu-rave was popular overseas and now you can't go anywhere without having your retinas burned out by neon orange and geometric patterns.
Arrrgh to skinny jeans, the other night I saw a young guy, wearing the most disturbingly tight jeans and the classic emo fringe over his eyes so it was a combination of baby face/adult trouser bulge. So wrong.

I really don't think what you've described is solely a trait of Australian retailers and fashion. I found it quite similar in London and to some extent Paris too. What you've described is fairly typical of most fashion - a trend comes in, eventually run into the ground and then replaced with something else. Thats not just Australia.

really? i found it quite different in london....there seemed to be more individuality and less trend-following....though i guess it depends where you are....

I'm from London and sometimes got frustrated at how everyone would jump on the bandwagon with trends. I also got sick of how many people had that "Topshop" or H&M look, if you know what I mean...Not that there is anything wrong with Topshop (god, I'd have died without it!) I think it depends on so many factors - what you're in to, where you hang out etc...

What I'm trying to say is that you get trend hounds in every city, not just Australia. :flower:

right...i agree with you...
you do get 'trend hounds' everywhere....
i suppose i have just found it particularly prominent in sydney....i have just moved back here after 7yrs overseas and was shocked at the amount of 'clones' that walk down the street one after the other....it seems to be worse than it was 5 or 6 yrs ago....

even melbourne is much less 'trendy'...
