Alot of the pictures posted here are pretty bad,but these do not represent all Australian style. People need to find some pictures that show the wonderfully dressed people.

The thing is, there are well dressed people in Aust. but most of these photos are from clubs or they focus on more trendy/eccentric dressing - you don't really see people dressed like this all the time!

I find Aust. style to be more 'surfy' if anything... but I do live in Perth

This thread embarasses me endlessly. I hope people don't believe that this is how Melbournians commonly dress. I see some of the most classy & stylish people walking around Chadstone SC and the city...I don't know where these photographers find all these loud, offbeat, shockingly dressed scensters.

Me neither! I posted lots of those photos because I thought they were funny, but I hate how, to these photographers, they are supposed to represent the pinnacle of style and originality.

Hahah Aussie style? It's so diverse man. Generally not many people care for fashion here. They dress up kind've sluttish sometimes(younger girls) clothes for younger girls are usually brought from supre' and many people truly don't care and really have no clue what looks good either , there are some OTT people that dress quite cool , there are some really stylish business people with cool chiffon buns and trench coats , a lot of people wear jeans tank tops and flats. The majority of the people in my school find kate Moss , Gemma Ward, Lily Cole and the models uglyy.. they are very into classical beauties. They love classically appealing vlothes as apposed to bohemian full on..

As an Australian, what really strikes me looking at each and every single one of these people is that they ALL look like poor students. Where is the style? These people are still opshopping like its 1999!!!(and believe me i have nothing against vintage..but move on from mismatching and get into different forms of experimentation!)

Oh gosh i know. i wear weird clothes. I got to get rid of the Cut Copy ish Clothes. But at least i Match my gear together.

I've done a fair bit of thinking and...

I think it's fair to say that Australian 'street style' is very experimental, kooky and eccentric... Or at least, a majority of... Keep in mind that this is street style we're talking about here; not many people are willing to get all dressed up in their best gear just to go to the grocery store or whatever... Even if you're wearing the simplest of things in the simplest of places, you'll get looks; I think people here generally like to check each other out.

And yes, a lot Aussies are rather trendy and are quick to follow trends but, I guess that goes back to my point of the street style here being very experimental. A lot of people here like to experiment! Most of the people you're seeing here are still young and having fun with fashion... They won't be dressing like that forever so, just let them have fun. Maybe they should try different forms of experimentation... But what if what they're wearing is what they truly like and they wanna stick to it?

There are well-dressed Aussies, of course, and I think it's hard to define 'Australian style' as a whole because each state and the people there are all different. The style is very diverse, as kristina said, and that's because we have such a diverse mix of people living here... You also have to take into account the person's occupation, their background, their interests... Like Mr. Peters (that I posted a coupla pages back), he's the creative assistant for Belinda; of course he's gonna be decked out in the best gear! He's travelled a lot and was probably popping out for his lunch break when that photo was taken. Try catching the people working at the magazines, boutiques and what not while they're on their lunch break or something... Those scenester kids are probably into a certain type of music, partying, having fun, being young; hence, the reason why they dress as such... And as for all of the 'well-dressed' Aussies (including you tFSers), they're all probably in tune with the art of fashion, appreciate the structure, design and what not of the clothing and are aware of the fashions in other cities...

I saw some nicely dressed people last night at the Angus & Julia Stone gig... One in gorgeous girl in a plaid shirt, skinny jeans and chunky heels; another in high-waisted denim shorts with black tights, a black jacket and black ankle boots; one in high-waisted jeans and a gorgeous white blouse and another in a divine canary yellow dress with black footless tights... There was lots of vintage and second-hand frocks, shirts, kicks, bags and what not, ones who dressed rather plain and simple and then the ones that really couldn't give a damn... I think all in all, it boils down once again to diversity; people have different tastes, lifestyles, occupations, interests, et cetera...

I dunno where I'm getting at with all this but, I guess I'm just getting a little tired of hearing everyone complain about how terrible the Aussie fashion scene is and how people keep repeating that there are well-dressed Aussies - we know there are! Perhaps the photographers are partly to blame for not showcasing all the different styles that are around here... Of course we're no Paris, New York, London or whatever (which, I'm sure there are some poorly dressed people there too); we're Australia and the diverse and various styles here are what makes us what we are. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no 'one style' here! There's a great mix of people and therefore, a great mix of styles...

Hmm i live in Brisbane, i cant say that people here are particularly original. Some people are out there, but generally in groups and they all look the same. The most noticable trend on the street, is that "emo" style meaning black hair tight black skinnys, facial piercings, cons or something similar. Then theres the metro ... white or faded jeans, pastel type shirts as in peach lemon and lime.. with lots of crappy writing on it. Boys with a david bowie cut, but only as a trend not actually as a statement to bowie. Like the good old metro try hard mohawk or mullet. I have noticed recently lots of confused styles meaning metro emos or indie metros. People who dont want to quite got for the full emo, and have brown hair and a pink shirt but piercings and skinnys or the metro in a cardigan etc.
I used to hang around an indie scene a bit, the whole deal there was mess is more, as in if you do look too clean you are try hard, even though the messy people have clearly tried just as hard to be messy.
I have to say 80's actually is a massive influence, although lots of people would like to say otherwise, its a bit of a backlash i guess in that lots of people dont want to look like jocks, so they go out of their way to not look modern and shiny with their massive Quifs. Almost trying to look bad, to look different. Although no one would admit that.
All i can say is although it may not be great im happy to see a bit of experimenting, its better than everyone wearing sass and bide.
